Miami Marlins first baseman / outfielder Logan Morrison may have had a difficult season on the field, but off the field, he is just as charitable and willing to give as ever. As a result, he was named the Marlins' nominee for the 2012 Roberto Clemente Award. The award is for off-the-field charitable contributions, and it is described below as written in the linked article.
The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet pays tribute to Clemente's achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others. The award is named for the 15-time MLB All-Star and Hall of Famer who died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
All 30 MLB clubs have a representative, and fans can vote for the winner on MLB.com.
As much as we can get on Morrison's case about being immature on his Twitter account, there is no doubt that the man is a giving individual who has worked hard for the south Florida community while he has been here. There is no mistaking Morrison's contributions in causes such as the American Lung Association, Miami Children's Hospital, and other organizations.
Of course, Morrison's motivation to some of these causes is tied to his own personal family life. If you will recall, his father died of lung cancer a few years ago, and Morrison has really spearheaded a charge for that organization with yearly events every offseason. Earlier in the season, Morrison started up a program for children and families who had lost a parent at the advice of a child who had himself lost a father. Morrison seemed enthusiastic to begin the program and took time out to bring the families to the game and speak to them in the dugout.
I cannot think of a more deserving player than Morrison for this award, and if you would like LoMo to win this award, you can help by voting for him here. if you do, you have a chance to win four tickets to the World Series!
