Miami Marlins Not Shopping, Still Listening on Giancarlo Stanton

Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE

According to assistant general manager Dan Jennings, the Miami Marlins are not shopping star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, but they are listening to any offers by teams.

The Miami Marlins have made it very clear that they are uninterested in trading star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, even as the rest of the team seems to be falling apart around them. The team is not willing to make a trade for their best player just because the organization chose to rebuild its pieces around him. Nevertheless, assistant general manager Dan Jennings mentioned on Jim Bowden's Sirius XM radio show that the team is still listening to offers on the outfielder.

This is par for the course for the Marlins really. Truth be told, it is par for the course for any team, including the Fish. Why would the Marlins not listen to any offers on any players, even the nigh untouchable ones like Giancarlo Stanton? If the right offer comes along for the Marlins, the team should consider it, especially given the status of Stanton's relationship with the Marlins. Furthermore the Marlins need all the help they can get in terms of player talent to build up for the new core for the future.

On the other hand, the Marlins are probably quite aware of the fact that Stanton is worth so much that he is essentially untradable. So while there is definitely smoke with possible discussion with the Texas Rangers among other teams, it is very likely that the team will retain Stanton through at least the 2013 season. The team's best shot of retaining him further than that is to show off a decent group in 2014 to convince Stanton that a future can be had in Miami. If he does not see that, you can consider his Miguel Cabrera-like goodbye imminent.
