Marlins Roster Moves

The Marlins made a couple of roster moves today and the first involves tonight's starting pitcher.

Pitcher Brad Hand was called up from Double-A Jacksonville and will start Saturday, and reliever Ryan Webb was put on the 15-day disabled list to make room for Hand on the roster.

Hand pitched pretty well his first time up the Marlins, going 15.2 innings, in 3 starts, allowing 9 hits and 6 earned runs for an ERA of 3.45. Hand's biggest problems were keeping the ball in the park (4 HR) and walking waaay too many (9 BB). There is no doubt the young man has talent, it is just that he isn't polished. Tonight may prove quite a challenge since the Rangers ballpark is very hitter friendly.

In another move the Marlins DFA'd Jose Lopez and recalled Brian Petersen.

The Jose Lopez experiment is over, Woo Hoo! It never should have been undertaken in the first place. While with the Marlins, Lopez hit .103/.161./.138. But what did you expect from a 8-year career player who had put up .262./.294/.393 during that time. He was never going to add much in the way offense.

Petersen is a good addition to the team, if nothing else he will provide a defensive replacement for Stanton in the late innings. Also he will give the Marlins a left-handed bat off the bench, which isn't his strong suit being an everyday player at all levels in the minors. But he may do fine.

I really like the idea of Petey playing

in center, Wise is really just a stop-gap and Petey starting just feels like a more progressive plan

Welcome to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington

Cheers from the Chicken-Fried Nation.

We Rangers fans know that last night (or the last month for that matter) was not a fair exhibition of the Marlins’ ability. As the old saying goes, “Fifteen runs happens.” Or something like that.

The Rangers bring young, erratic Derek Holland to the mound tonight, who is very much like a box of chocolates—you never know what you’re going to get. But if the Fish can knock Derek out early, the Rangers’ bullpen is a mess. And remember, this is a Rangers team that lost two of three to the lowly Mets last week. It should be around 98 degrees (again) at game time, and maybe not as much wind as last night, when the balls were flying. There have been some thunderclouds hanging around Dallas-Fort Worth tonight, so a little spell of violent Texas weather isn’t out of the question.

Brad Hand may be younger than Holland, but at least he’s shaving regularly. But we love our Derek here in DFW, pimples and all.
