Marlins fans!

Hello there, Marlins fans! The fine folks at Pinstripe Alley, the Yankees' SBN site is working on a feature called 29 teams and 29 trades. The concept is this: you pick any of the other 29 teams and your team to see if a hypothetical trade can be worked out between the two. I chose the Marlins and being a Yankees fan, don't have a clue about your team. What your team needs (both at the MLB level and minors), and what is the farm system like for the Fish? I came up with 2 offers that needs some input after the jump. Jump!!

Star-divide

Trade 1:

Yankees give: C/DH Jesus Montero, 1 of SPs Manny Banuelos and D. Betances, UTIL Eduardo Nunez, and SP Ivan Nova

Marlins give: SP Josh Johnson, UTIL Omar Infante, and 1 of OFs Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich

Trade 2:

Yankees give: SP Hector Noesi, UTIL Eduardo Nunez, OF Nick Swisher, 1 of Betances and Banuelos, Montero

Marlins give: Josh Johnson, Chris Coghlan, Infante, and Volstad/A. Sanchez

Thanks for the help!

Our team needs, as I understand them...

Are a 4th/5th SP and perhaps a CF. To address your proposed trades, neither seem realistic. First, I highly doubt Josh Johnson would be traded for ANYONE on the Yankees other than Sabathia and even that may be doubtful. JJ is our ace and we’re not trading him for anything other than an ace, if at all. Coghlan and Volstad are possiblities, but from what I gather, Yelich is probably our top prospect so it’s not likely we’d trade him unless he’s part of a big deal. I’d have to know the Yankees’ needs to suggest a counter trade, but I would say our untouchables would include Johnson, Ramirez, Stanton, Morrison, and anyone we just acquired. Our fearless leader at this blog, Michael Jong, would be way more qualified than me to take a stab at this, but this is my two cents.

Marlins in the off-season. Get some... Free agents, that is.

we need starters, a few bench guys, and roster filler for the minors

The problem with these trade offers

is that they are geared towards the future rather than towards the now. Montero, Betances, and Banuelos are all top-notch prospects, but the Marlins are interested in winning now, and trading Johnson for any of these guys is unlikely to accomplish the team’s goal of being competitive in 2012 in order to build the fan base. Even if the trades were fair (and I’m inclined to think they are at least worth discussing), it would not fit the team’s current desire to compete.

The players on the second deal do look intriguing, but we don’t have any room unfortunately for Nick Swisher, even though I thoroughly enjoy his game. Nunez would essentially replace Infante in the lineup, though I have questions about his ability to play defense in the infield. Noesi may be major league ready, and Montero would slot nicely into the catcher position and probably be an immediate upgrade over Buck for the time being. Again, it’s worth discussing but probably does not improve the current team, which is what the front office wants.

Brett Gardner

is the player the Marlins could benefit from greatly. He is a plus defender in center field and has a delicious .353 OBP. He would fit very nicely into the Marlins lineup and fill a hole in center field.

I am just not sure what the Marlins have to offer in return. Gardner would require a pretty large package. Matt Dominguez plus Jose Fernandez might do it. The Yankees need someone to take over the third base role when Alex Rodriguez shifts to DH.

I encourage you to check out Fish Stripes, Catch-28 and my twitter.

Now that you mention Gardner, I'm interested in re-working trade offer 2 to include Gardner for Dominguez + Fernandez and dropping JJ

so let’s say:
Yankees give: Gardner, Cervelli, Nunez, 1 of Betances/Banuelos, Noesi

Marlins give: A. Sanchez, Dominguez, Coghlan, Fernandez, Infante

It can be however many we want to put, it just has to be fair

so nothing like, let’s say Stanton for the Yankees worst player in single A ball or something.

I would be comfortable with this trade if:

Instead of Anibal Sanchez, you took Ricky Nolasco.

Give me Banuelos, Gardner, and Nunez

I’ll give you Nolasco, Infante, Coghlan and a b+ prospect

You get 3 proven (for the most part) MLB players, 2 of which we’d consider trading… we get a utility guy to replace Infante (who I don’t like, for the record), a close 2 or 2 SP (I’ve seen him at Trenton, he’s pretty nasty), and the CF we desperately need…

by jrsyeagle on Dec 23, 2011 3:28 PM EST reply actions

That's nowhere close to fair for the Yankees

Gardner and Banuelos are worth a lot more than what we’d be offering. Nolasco is on two years of team control and has possible concerns (hence the reason why we’re interested in trading him) and Coghlan at this point holds little value. In fact, the piece that holds the most trade value in that Marlins side of the offer is Infante!

I think the Marlins could get one of those guys plus Nunez for those pieces. I’m not sure.

The final trade ended up being: Nolasco, Fernandez, Infante, Coghlan, Dominguez for Gardner, Nunez, Cervelli, Betances, and Noesi.
