Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Phillies (9/7)
Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies, Sep 7, 2010 7:05 PM EDT
The Marlins will be looking to secure the series split tonight.
Chris Volstad takes the hill for the Marlins. This will be Volstad's first start since the brawl. One thing that kinda gets lost in that start is that, Volstad didn't pitch all that well in the game. The Marlins really need him to go semi-deep in tonight's game. The bullpen needs the rest. If he can keep the ball down and find the zone, he should be fine.
Joe Blanton is on the mound for the Phillies. Blanton is coming off his shortest outing of the season, going only 4.1 innings against the Rockies in his last start. For the most part, Blanton has pitched well this season and like most pitchers he does best work at home. This will be Blanton's first start of the year against the Marlins.
Ichthyomancy has been reminded once again why holidays are more fun than work.
Best of Luck to You!

Hanley
Marlins catch a Philly stealing
Chris Coghlan is the 2009 NLRoY (that's a +1 for me!)
Josh Johnson for the 2010 NL Cy Young!
Boni starting at third...
Not a fan of that. He’s been fine in the outfield and at second, but let’s please not give me visions of last season, please.

He's the toughest guy I've seen play baseball in years

But he is not made out of rubber. He needs to be careful.

infield was back
all hanley needed was a routine ground ball for the rbi….. oh well
We are down by only 1. Phillies player mistook Espada for Davis and made a dumb error.

Balk....Bonifacio now in 3rd

What an interesting game. Some games are boring regardless of whether you are winning or loosing
This has been the opposite. A very exciting game.

If Hanley Ramirez messes this next at bat...I will flush his autographed rookie card down the toilette
Do or die time Hanley!

Hanley got fooled on that one
Oh well, tie game, let’s keep it that way bullpen…

Yeah, that worries me. I've seen the bullpen flush too many good games down the toilette this year

Too early to tell. He just had a bad game. Could come back next game and go yard.

Alright Veras, minimize the damage now

F@#K the Bullpen. Thanks for messing it up again!!!

I hate Veras, I hate Nunez...can we trade the bullpen for two sacks of fertilizer?
What's more frustrating than being a Marlins and Orioles fan? Eye surgery???
I really don't get why you'd hate Veras
Five earned runs allowed in 33.1 innings since the end of June is about as good as a bullpen pitcher can do. And while Leo’s been erratic, he’s not bad (and is cheap to boot). Jorge Sosa is a much better target for your ire.

Bonifacio's looking surprisingly decent this year.
Granted, it’s not a huge sample size, but still.
Unless, of course, it takes playing time away from Ryan Anderson.
It's like someone taught him how to play finally
If the performance remains consistent, he and Murphy would make a pretty good tandem of utility men off of the bench.

Eh... it's not like he's doing anything remarkably different.
He’s just doing better at pitch recognition, is all. That’s a normal thing for a young guy to improve on.
(Now, if only we can get Maybin to do the same…)
Unless, of course, it takes playing time away from Ryan Anderson.
And Wes goes down hacking
I love you Uncle Wes, but please, don’t do that…

Game lost for lack of a bullpen

Congrats to Trevor Time, glad the Brewers let him get the chance at it
Despite the great success of rookie John Axford.
