Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Nationals at Marlins (9/1)
Washington Nationals at Miami Marlins, Sep 1, 2010 7:10 PM EDT
The Marlins are going for the series win tonight.
Chris Volstad takes the hill for the Marlins. Volstad is pitching well recently and his last start was a fantastic outing. As long as Chris can keep his pitches down and in the park, he should be fine.
Scott Olsen toes the rubber for the Nationals. Scottie O! You remember him. Ollie has lost his last five starts in-a-row, but only one was due to a horrible outing, and that one was against the Marlins. The main problem Scott has faced is that the Nats don't score any runs when he is on the mound. No need for that to change.
Ichthyomancy is good to go.
Best of Luck to You!

Okay, Morgan getting drilled shouldn't be an AAB
Because it’s part of baseball tradition. That’s not “above and beyond” anything.

they gave hanley a double for that??
he shouldve been out by 15 ft

35 HR/year power...
…at least.
He has 15 home runs in 280 PAs. That works out to around 35 in a normal season (650-700 PAs)… but this isn’t a normal season.
Discount July, his first month in the majors, and he has 13 home runs in 200 PAs. That’s more like a 45-HR pace.
And discount his recent slump, which may be caused by the fatigue of his first ever full-length season… well, it’s probably not fair to discount this one. Everyone slumps sometimes.
And yes, this is a small sample size. Yes, it probably helps that nobody yet knows how to pitch him.
On the other hand, he’s 20 years old. He’s made vast strides every year he’s played so far… and even within seasons. And how many players had reached their full home run power at the age of 20? Heck, a lot of players who go on to become solid power guys don’t even have HR power at 20.
He does need to cut down on the strikeouts, though… and learn to hit lefties. It’s a small sample size, and I haven’t looked up whether this was a problem in the minors, but man, he has not been good this year against the lefties.
Basketball trivia time! The Orlando Magic used 12 players during the 2009-10 season. How many of them posted an eFG% lower than Carmelo Anthony?
This game is getting out of hand, in a good way

What was witht he second (attempted) plunking?
The Nats were down 10 runs at the time- it’s not like Morgan was trying to run up the score. What was the Marlins’ beef?
The beef is that Morgan tried to show Volstad off by stealing all those bases when the Marlins were ahead by 11 runs
Morgan was too proud to take his medicine and tried to make a fool out of the Marlins. So he got his second when Gabby destroyed him.

OK but sincere quesiton-
How is stealing a base showing someone up? Did he excessively celebrate after he swiped them? Stealing bases is a big part of what little game Morgan has going for him- is he supposed to stop trying?
Unwritten rule in baseball...you don't steal when you are down by 10 or more.
Stealing carries a risk of injury, managers tell their players not to do it when they are down by more than 10.
What made it bad is that he was plunked as payback for Hayes yesterday, then proceeded to break that unwritten rule just to tell the Marlins…“I have no remorse for what I did yesterday, up yours!” He didn’t take his medicine like a professional would have.
Therefore, he had it coming again. And the way he cursed at the crowd as he was leaving, he is in trouble. Chapman is already facing a suspension for an incident a week or so ago.

I think he may be in line for a remainder of the season suspension

Lost in the commotion was a rather poor start by Volstad
6 earned runs on 9 hits, with 3 HBP and a wild pitch. Not sharp, but on this night, it doesn’t matter.

Eh...
The way Boni’s been taking to the plate recently, I’m not too disappointed with him being used in the utility role. Chad Tracy and Hector Luna will probably split time at third, at least until Coghlan is cleared for play (IF he’s cleared). We could also see Baker back mid-month, but after his last set-back, don’t count on it.

Bonifacio's got a .669 OPS since the break.
Certainly not great numbers, but given his speed, he can definitely make it as a utility guy with those numbers.
Really, though, utility-infield questions pale in comparison to Maybin getting as many major league ABs as possible now. They have to get this guy to at least a .700 OPS level by next season… once he’s not a liability on the major-league level, we can keep him in the lineup and the rest of the development will come much faster.
(Really really, though, it’s a shame Murphy got hurt. That’s the first thing.)
Basketball trivia time! The Orlando Magic used 12 players during the 2009-10 season. How many of them posted an eFG% lower than Carmelo Anthony?
Get Over It
You cannot hit a guy twice in one game and expect him not to charge. I find it pretty embarrasing that someone half Volstad’s size landed the only punch of the fight. I do admit it was kinda childish for him to salute the crowd like he did. That would really piss me off if I was one of the 50 people at that game. You guys suck. You will never draw fans even in your stupid little new ballpark.
is a Nationals fan really making fun of other teams? funny...
your team is a JOKE! fuck the nationals!!!! and we can hit him as many times as we want, he took out our catcher for the rest of the season with that bonehead play… GO FISH!!!!
I don't think you realize
The first HBP was for railroading our catcher and ending his season. The second was for showing up the marlins by stealing bases down 11. Really, what good does that one extra run do when you’re down double digits?
Says the guy whose team last made the playoffs twenty-nine years ago
And whose team is the definition of a “perennial second-division ballclub.”
cardinals' fan here
if you’ve noticed how the cardinals have played lately, you’d realize i have nothing better to talk about
anyway, just popped in to say that gaby sanchez is a bad ass!
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
twatter
Shut up cardinals fan
How is sanchez a badass. He hit a guy that was focussing on another guy. And he was twice his size. I didnt see any marks or bruises on Morgan’s face like I did on that bitch Volstads.
He's a badass for trying to prevent an idiot from hurting his pitcher
It’s called comraderie, a principal that baseball (among all sports) holds very highly. And as for Nyjer Morgan’s conduct…
How in the world do you justify what he’s done over the past few weeks? He was already playing on an appealed suspension for hurling a ball into the stands in a reckless manner, so he should have been playing on his best behavior. Instead, in St. Louis, he ran into a catcher who (a) was not looking in his direction, and (b) who did not have the ball and was not in line to receive it in the time it would take Morgan to cross the plat.
So, with that in mind, he travels to Florida, where he deliberately slams full-force into another catcher, thereby separating his shoulder and ending his season (by the way, that’s our third catcher to go down, so yeah, the Marlins were going to be a bit defensive). However, the most noticeable issue is that Morgan could have (and should have) slided to the plate, which would have scored the go-ahead run and not caused the injury to Brett Hayes.
So, going into tonight, it was already established that based on his conduct in the prior game (and seeing that it was far from an accident based on his previous behavior), Morgan was going to be hit in retribution, by a pitcher who is looking out for the interests of his catcher (his most important ally on the field). Volstad waited to hit Morgan until the game was 14-3 and all but out of reach. The “beanball” was done in a rather professional manner, hitting Morgan in a place that would not injure him or show him up. But rather than accepting the retribution and moving on (as 99% of major league baseball players would), he decided to show-up Volstad, and steal not one, but two bases on subsequent pitches. And adding insult to injury, on the sac fly that scored Morgan, Donnie Murphy injured himself, something that probably wouldn’t have occurred if Morgan had not spitefully stolen the two bases.
So, with all of that boiling near the surface, Volstad pitched behind Morgan, to serve notice that the Marlins were not going to put up with his antics on the field. And lo and behold, Morgan, instead of acting rationally, charged Volstad, a pitcher, and tried to punch him in the face. It was not a surprise to anyone that a great teammate like Gaby Sanchez was not going to watch his pitcher get slugged on the mound without trying to do something about it.
So, when it comes down to it, the size of the fighters has nothing to do with this. Morgan, through his rampant disrespect for the game and for the Marlins organization, is completely at fault in this altercation, and should be suspended for the remainder of the season. No rational adult should act like this.
And please, don’t disrespect the Marlins fanbase without knowing a thing about us, or our organization. I respect the Nationals, and though this case will hurt that respect, I will not resort to such petty insults directed towards them.
You, however, are a complete tool who may as well stop watching baseball tonight. Thanks for reading, and please never visit again.

Morgan is a child and so is this nats fan on our site...
I guess being blind is his best defense. Weren’t they just talking about Nationals poor attendance not to long ago. Yeah we have a new stadium. Don’t be jealous. Strasburg 12-18months? Yeah you’ll be lucky to put an ass in those seats. I’m so glad Sanchez put that child to sleep. Morgan is probably the first punk who crawled of there. He acts like a tantrum waiting to happen. He openly disregarded his managers and stole bases anyhow. A selfish play and he knew what he was doing. Give me a break, he got jumped and i didnt see many of his teamates defending him. Wonder why? It’s because he is a punk.
