Jeff Conine Retire His number? Marlins Game jersey's wanted......
Guys the Marlins Management Sucks, Hanley is awesome and so is the name Uggla. I wish the Marlins would retire at least retire a number (Jeff Conine, for starters 18 or 19). I think its time they build on a little tradition, it could possibly help build the Marlins fanbase. The only downside is that Conine, as solid as he was playing, moved around so often he never stayed on one team for over 5 years. Even so, Conine still made a huge impact on the Marlins Teamshe played on, and he will always be MR. MARLIN!!! Personally he is my favorite player I received his 1995 All Star Game Used jersey from a popular Game used dealer a couple years ago, and its the jersey he wore in the All-star game where he won the MVP. With the success the Marlins have had in its existence, albeit a relatively small one, I think management owes it to the fans to retire Conine's number. like If you are selling any Marlins Memorabilia e-mail me at steedastang00@yahoo.com. Or if interested in any of my jersey's let me know as well. I have been collecting since the the early 90's and have followed the Marlins since the start. Eh....
The trouble is that Jeff does not have a “number” that was identified with him. He wore 18 and 19, both of which were also worn by other famous Marlins (Moises Alou and Mike Lowell come right to mind).
Besides, while he is the only Marlin to be on the inaugural team and both world series teams, he spent more time away from the Marlins then not, and his stats were not that great.
My bet is that Hanley will be the first Marlin with a retired number.
I am actually an overly proud owner of a
Jeff Conine #18, authentic, autographed, pinstriped jersey.. as everyone here is well aware of the internal strife I go through deciding what to wear to road games.
While I don’t know much of the story behind it, here is what I was told:
I was desperate for a new team jersey after Cabrera got traded and tired of buying guys that once they became valued to the fan base, would no longer be on the team. I decided on Jeff and the search began. Since xmas was around the corner, I figured I’d ask Santa for one, but in the meantime tried to find something I didn’t have to have customized.
On about the 8th page of google search results I came across an outdated post on Craig’s List of someone trying to sell it in North Carolina. The couple lived in Miami for a few years, got to know a team trainer, and for some occasion he gave them the autographed jersey, saying it was game worn.
The jersey was listed for $50 and I told them I would take it, just wanted some pictures first to make sure it at least looked legit, I didn’t care about game worn or a real autograph. By the time they got the pictures, some else offered $50 and they told me they sold it.
This obviously didn’t settle well with me, so I said that that wasn’t particularly fair, and they should at least give me the chance to “outbid” the person, even if it was already sold to me 1st. Push came to shove and $100 later I got the jersey.. and love it.
Hanley for sure
Theres a stigma around retiring a number for a player similar in style to Jeff Conine. Its the intangibles he brings to the field which counts, good teammate, stellar offense, and the hometown likeabaility. Usually numbers are retired by more quality players, Hanley is definately one of those guys, if the Marlins keep him. Jrsyeagle thats a cool story its hard to find his jersey’s
