Chris Volstad optioned, Burke Badenhop recalled
After last night's game, the Marlins optioned Chris Volstad and recalled Burke Badenhop.
Chris Volstad was optioned to Class AAA New Orleans late Tuesday night after allowing five runs in five innings in Florida’s 7-3 loss to the Dodgers.
Burke Badenhop was recalled from New Orleans to take Volstad’s roster spot and right-hander Alex Sanabia, who’s now pitching out of the bullpen, is in line to start Sunday, which would’ve been Volstad’s start.
Not exactly sure I understand the necessity of this. I don't mean recalling the Hopper, I'm all for that, but sending Volstad down and giving Sanabia a start. Volstad while only going three-plus innings did throw 70 pitches. So it is not like they can start him on short rest in NOLA to give him some extra time to work on his sinker, and other pitches. Not to mention, Triple-A also takes off the All-Star break. Granted it is one less day off than the Marlins will experience, but they still take three days off. And furthermore there was nothing about Sanabia's outing last night that screamed, start me.
I guess the lesson to be learned is if you are going to implode after 3 innings you need to be a lefty and one that was traded for, and if you are, there no repercussions. Should you not be, Hellooo New Orleans.
Aside: Welcome back Hopper! He is a site favorite after all.

I like hopper coming back.
I like volstad going down
I’m not in love with sanabia getting a start. Still wanting to see Sean west get another chance.
Maybe some minor league time is what volstad needs, but for right now, he’s on my sh*t list, so I’m pretty alright with this. But sanabia? Might as well just let hopper start again…

About time Volstad went down
He’s been underperforming for the past 2 seasons. I say VandenHurk deserves a chance over him.
Minors
What people are not realizing is that these guys you mention are not performing well in the minors. Go look at milb.com and look at the marlins minor league affiliates. Their stats are not warranting them being called up. What’s even more terrifying is if you look at Andrew Miller and Ryan Tucker’s stats. Ouch.
their stats are still better than some guys in the majors that need time in the minors.
are you suggesting that we just send guys down and not call up? or worse just leave them getting roughed up in the majors? some of these minor league guys do have some numbers that warrant a call up, and deserve a second chance. i am NOT one for constant rollercoaster of characters, but sometimes some guys need a change of scenery… and the bottom line is, the FO isnt trading, so what else can they do?
thank you
bye bye volstad now sanabia looks like a kid that can get wins and get you deep into games idc what his stats were so far its all out of the bullpen i bet you if he starts he will do much better
Volstad was playing just fine peripherally
He’s basically the same pitcher he was last year, minus the major home run problem. I’m not sure what more everybody wanted.
