Well, at least Cody Ross fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

The fan favorite is staying put, but the Marlins did pull off a deal right before the trade deadline to help bolster the ailing bullpen. According to reports, the Fish sent RHP Rick VandenHurk to Baltimore for lefty reliever Will Ohman.

In 51 games with the O's, Ohman has an ERA of 3.30 and a WHIP of 1.60. Opponents are batting .270 against him overall, but he's held lefties to a .226 BA.

It could be nice to have a lefty in the pen who might actually get lefties out and stuff.

I hate this move

Were trading away starting pitching when we have no 5th starter?

I get it… Sort of

I dont get it

Is he a FA after this season ?

I think he's only signed on a 1 year

1.35 Mill deal. For some reason I thought it was a 3 year deal, but I can’t find it anywhere.

Doesn’t seem like an intelligent move from my perspective..

just a one year

still a decent move tho.. vanden has been pretty much a lost cause. hey, normally around this time with this record we would be sellers! maybe the tide is starting to turn :)

I get bringing in a solid lefty to our aching bullpen

But giving up Vandy seems like a bit of a stretch, unless the FO is planning on bringing Ohman back for next year.

Chris Coghlan is the 2009 NLRoY (that's a +1 for me!)

What is this garbage?

We traded away a starter for a 32-year-old version of Renyel Pinto?

Yeah, that’s not fair. Pinto was at least good at preventing home runs.

I call him LeBron Jim for short.

As long as his pace is better than Pinto's infuriatingly slow one, I'm good with it

He'll get a great chance to start with the O's

But it does mean he has to play against the AL East…

Bummed too

We still got Sean West though

I don't think so...we have great starters, but our bullpen was radioactive waste

I think this is a good trade, we could use a good lefty. Let’s give this guy a chance, I don’t think anyone can do worse than Pinto…at least let’s hope not for our sake.

What's more frustrating than being a Marlins and Orioles fan? Eye surgery???

by Osley Sallent on Jul 31, 2010 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Our starters aren't "great"

JJ, Ricky, and Anibal are a very good 1-2-3 punch, but following them has been Sanabia, Volstad, and Robertson, who’s performances don’t amount to anything of value thus far. Vandy was a good prospect to eventually take one of those slots, but much like Andrew Miller, did little at the major league level to earn it. I dunno, I wish we could’ve gotten more for Vandy, but it’s not like having him as a AAA star helps the organization.

You're probably right

I always felt VandenHurk in our rotation would quickly make it much better than it is right now. On the other hand the team probably expects Ohman to be light-out so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

not sure what this says about the fish going forward

vandy couldve & probably shouldve been pitching with the fish since opening day.. long reliever/take over for nate…. he easily pitched well enough to get a spot

so if not vandy for the 5th spot then……. does that say west/miller/tucker are improving? is someone standing out as the favorite to start in sept?
by giving up the potential & value of vandy does that mean the fish will actually spend $$ to keep a left RP for more than 2 months??

this deal could go either way. just depends on some things.
but if vandy goes the Os & dominates then this was a bad move no matter what…..
