The Marlins are still on the road, and tonight finds the fighting Fish in San Diego for a three-game series.  The Padres are in first place in the West and have the best record in the NL, and as goes with the territory of having the best record, they are hot right now.

Chris Volstad takes the hill for the Marlins.  Volstad pitched reasonably well in his first start since returning to the big club.  Normally, it is imperative for Volstad to keep everything down and induce ground balls.  When he does, he has success.  However, tonight he will be pitching in a fly ball-friendly park.  So if he should leave a couple up, it will be the job of the outfield to run them down.

Wade LeBlanc is the pitcher of choice for the Padres.  LeBlanc is a soft-tossing lefty.  Oh, great, another one of those.  He is a fast ball (87 mph), cutter, curve, change pitcher.  The change is his most effective pitch, but the cutter ain't shabby.  Like most pitchers, he does his best work at home.  It is doubtful he will go much more than six innings.

Ichthyomancy is ready for another round of Midnight Baseball.

Best of Luck to You!

Cantu not in the Rangers lineup tonight

maybe they don’t have his name on a uni yet

Well, they called up someone from AAA (Mike Moreland, I think) just two days ago to replace Kinsler

So sending him down right after calling him up might be a little rude.

That looked like a CRAZY play.

Did the Marlins just decide to play catch amongst themselves while the Padres scored?!?

A manufactured run, too bad Ronny's not quite quick enough

To go 2nd to 3rd on deep flys.

Between him and Furcal, I left two home runs on the bench today in fantasy

And yet, I’m not too disappointed. Jose Bautista’s meteoric rise just tends to cover other issues.

Two consecutive pitches result in a run and a man on first

Very clear sign that he’s been solved, especially after this many pitches. Volstad really needs to work on throwing fewer pitches, that’s what gets him more often than not.

Out in Colorado, the Cubs just went through the worst 8th inning ever

11 straight hits by the Rockies, 18 batters in the inning, 12 runs scored. That is…there just aren’t words…

by ocelotfox on Jul 31, 2010 12:07 AM EDT reply actions

At some point, you'd expect the Rockies to just, you know, end the inning in pity

But nope, they kept swinging for the fences. It was a bit cold-hearted.

but if youre the manager

you cant really go out there and tell your players to make an intentional out.. its not like basketball or football where you can run the clock out

Just in case the game goes to extra innings, I think

I’ve always liked the strategy behind the double switch.

what i meant was..

leo is coming in bottom of the 9th anyways.. he couldve just pinch hit for hensley if we made it that far down in the lineup this inning.. this way we could have another hitter on the bench if it does go to x innings!!
