Cantu is out....so now what?

After the Marlins defeated the San Francisco Giants to split the series, Jorge Cantu has been traded to the Texas Rangers for a few minor league arms.

So now who plays 3B?

Wes Helms is a good defensive option for third. Hes a veteran leader who's experience can be behooving.

Emilio Bonifacio would also be a great option in the lineup because of his speed. His hitting has been an improving as well.

Or should we give 3B to Donnie $%*&# Murphy? The guy hits a pinch hit walk off homer against the Colorado Rockies, a walk off knock against the Atlanta Braves, a pinch hit homer against the SF Giants to keep hopes alive for the Marlins, in just a week. Donnie deserves a shot a third if can field the position.

Helms and Murphy will probably split time

And Hector Luna’s getting called up from AAA as well.

only matter of time

until cogs comes back… & then its either him or gaby at 3rd

by byoung on Jul 30, 2010 1:35 AM EDT reply actions

That would be a nice Infield

1B LoMO
2B Uggla
SS Hanley
3B Gaby/Cogz

SICK

Not to be mean to LoMo

But he’s not gonna get playing time at Gaby’s expense. Gaby is one of the three most valuable hitters on the team right now, you don’t relegate that to the bench.

Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)

i think auh11

is under the impression if gaby is at third then cogs will play left field. which would make perfect sense

You gotta hate to lose more than you want to win

I am

Why not have Coghlan play LF? hes been playing there for like 2 years. If either Gaby or Logan can play 3rd then let them play and put Coghlan in the outfield, he can take advantage of his speed.

But that's just it, Gaby and Logan are (from what I understand) very sub-par in fielding 3B

It makes more sense to let the more athletic Coghlan play 3B, and let LoMo continue in LF.

True

Then that sounds good, lets see what happens

Is it just me or does mobile phones not show the poll?

Platoon

The best bet is to platoon those three at 3rd. Helms is very good defensively but with his age you cant really expect him to be an everyday guy. So basically you platoon them until one of them gets hot and runs away with it.

Now who plays third next year is a good question.

by Mr.Marlin 2.0 on Jul 30, 2010 1:50 PM EDT reply actions

yea platoon may be best bet

& find out what doesnt work &/or if anyone sticks out as a favorite.

i think a big part of our defensive problem for the past couple of years is we havent had a good first baseman sine derrek lee. (jacobs was awful, cantu & gaby mediocre) a 1B who can pick short hops probably saves 20-25 errors a year; at least with our infield it does

so we could prob improve a bunch just by having a good 1B

But you gotta admit

Hes been clutch lately and with his speed you gotta hope his hitting comes around

by Tony Capo on Aug 2, 2010 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

His defense is the reason he won't start at 3B

Cantu was very bad, but Bonifacio was worse.

Chris Coghlan is the 2009 NLRoY (that's a +1 for me!)
Josh Johnson for the 2010 NL Cy Young!

by ocelotfox on Aug 2, 2010 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah True

Cantu is meant to play 1B and Bonifacio is more of an OF.

by Tony Capo on Aug 2, 2010 6:54 PM EDT reply actions

I still don't know if I'd trust Bonifacio at any defensive position, honestly

He’s shown moments of good play, but his consistent abilities definitely relegate him to a bench role at best right now.

Maybe its just me and my love for speedy players

by Tony Capo on Aug 2, 2010 9:28 PM EDT reply actions

i will say this about boner

you can tell what he’s worked on in AAA: reading pitches, swinging at “his” pitches, making better contact…

but the fact still remains. he literally hasnt drawn one walk all season. he cant reliably put down bunts for hits or even good sac bunts. still only gets average-below avg jumps when stealing bases.

he just doesnt have baseball instincts: he should have at least 20/20 every year: 20 infield hits & 20 SBs that is.
shouldve been in minors all year last year to work on the multiple things he struggles at…
