Maybe the third time is a charm.  Once again the Marlins will be going for the spilt of the series.

Anibal Sanchez takes the hill for the Marlins.  Anibal pitched well in his last two starts, but of course, has nothing to show for it.  Either the defense wouldn't back him up or the offense forgot to score runs when he was on the mound.  Anibal is a pretty good daytime pitcher and to top that off, he had a good start in lasting outing against the Giants.

Madison Bumgarner is on the mound for the Giants.  Bumgarner is another fairly soft-tossing lefty.  How many of these do the Giants have?  He is a fast ball (90.4 mph), slider, curve, change type of pitcher.  So far this season, he has thrown everyone of them very well.  That said, his slider is probably his most effective pitch.  The Giants have won his last four starts, but those streaks don't last forever.  Bumgarner is a creature of the night and generally he doesn't perform as well when the sun is shining.  This will be his first start against the Marlins.  My recommendation to him is to throw high in the zone fast balls over the middle of the plate when he faces Dan Uggla.  This always works out well.

Ichthyomcany still be hating weekday day games.

Best of Luck to You!

Roy Oswalt is now in Philly

J.A. Happ and two others sent to the Astros. The Phillies must love guys named Roy…

Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)

I hate this

I love Roy Oswalt and hate to see him with that filthy team

by LadyFish on Jul 29, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Halladay's a great guy, too

But the Phillies have given away a whole lot of prospects just to get Halladay and a year or so of Roy Oswalt. And with this, Werth will surely not be re-signed.

Phils add Roy Oswalt

Are you f-ng kidding me? (I know you’re not, but, you know what I mean)

If he has to go anywhere

the Rangers are a good choice and fit and I think they’ll treat him well

by LadyFish on Jul 29, 2010 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

The Rangers are a good clubhouse, from what I understand

And also a very good baseball team. If Cantu heads there, I wish him the best.

I'm really surprised Ronny is catching this day game

maybe since it’s a left handed pitcher. I’m worried he is going to keel over.

Yeah...Cantu's gonna get that error

That’s an awful throw.

In other interesting news, Stephen Strasburg is on the 15-Day DL

That’s what happens when (as a starter) you continue to throw 98+ fastballs to major-league hitters. They’ll start to wear your arm down pretty quickly.

Every time I see him pitch, I'm reminded of Kerry Wood

A great arm, but one that seems destined to be blown out if overused.

i always liked him... and prior

they just got wasted away. i get excited that baseball is kind of going towards a rookie strong market (at least more than it has been in a while), instead of making great players waste away in the minors for 5 years… but i guess these guys are the reasons why they make kids wait.

Cantu's final AB as a Marlin

and he reaches 1B111

Or did he?

Eh.

I just feel like 90% of bullpen guys are hit-or-miss anyway. It’s only luck separating a 2.50 ERA guy from a guy who gets sent down in June (and emerges next year as a 2.50 ERA guy with another team).

I call him LeBron Jim for short.

I am ready for the Morrison-Stanton era.

Especially if Logan can stick at LF. I mean, I thought he’d be a valuable hitter at 1B… but if he can play solid defense in the outfield, we can go and get the meanest, most ridiculous power-hitting first baseman we can find.

I call him LeBron Jim for short.

by 3.3seconds on Jul 29, 2010 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

I'd pay kind of a lot for Dunn.

As a pure hitter, he’s top-10 in the league. Of course, he’s also a defensive liability even at first.

I mean, I’m not sure the Marlins would ever pay $10M+ a year for a free agent. And Dunn is probably better served going to the AL and playing DH. Not that I think he’s likely to break down physically. Yeah, a lot of unathletic first basemen start struggling in their early 30s. But Dunn isn’t fat, he’s just musclebound. And he’s had literally no injury problems in his past… he’s missed more than 10 games in a season exactly once.

But yeah… Dunn should really not be playing any defense, ever.

Practically speaking, they’ll probably hang onto Sanchez, which I guess is bearable if Sanchez can keep up this level of performance. (And better if he can improve his home run power just a bit….)

I call him LeBron Jim for short.

by 3.3seconds on Jul 29, 2010 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I would love to go get Dunn

But I just can’t see us paying out that kind of cash for him, especially since it seems that Uggla and Nolasco are going to get new deals in the off-season.

I'd probably rather hang onto Uggla...

…even though it kind of leaves Coghlan hanging. (Coghlan to 3B?)

I deserves extra points

For sitting at the bar across the street from the park instead of going in today. Great game. going to miss cantu. I just don’t get why you get a guy on the DL for tjs

by jrsyeagle on Jul 29, 2010 5:58 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I'm happy with a split

It sucks seeing Jorge go, but at least we steal some of the Rangers prospects, and Cantu probably won’t re-sign with them next season anyway.
