Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: All-Star Game

The starting pitcher for the NL is Ubaldo Jimenez.  The starting pitcher for the AL is David Price.

The festivities begin at 8:00 p.m.  The game should start around 8:20 p.m.

Hanley Ramirez is the starting short stop for the NL, but you knew that already.  Do expect to see Josh Johnson on the mound at some point in the game.  Even Charlie Manuel isn't dumb enough to leave JJ in the pen.  But I will say this Manuel has surprised me in the past, so we will see.

If you are looking for a fun place to hangout with others and watch the game, may we suggest the Marlins Watch Party at:

Corona Watch Party
Boomers! Greater Ft. Lauderdale
1700 NW 1st Street
Dania Beach , FL 33004

We think Billy and the Mermaids will be there handing out prizes and just generally brightening up the place.

Ichthyomancy is slightly different in that you won't be making an attendance pick.  What you will be deciding, if you choose to play, is whether the AL or NL will be victorious, the MVP of the game but take heart there will be two other players deemed point worthy other than the actual MVP.  And also, the standard AAB pick is in play.

Since I have no idea what the participation rate will be tonight, your name will be added along with your picks when they are made. Or maybe to be more precise, when I get home from work or sometime there after. Once again you do not have to select a Marlin, you can if want, though it is not required.  The points do count towards Ichthyomancy.  GameFish and I play in this version of Ichthyomancy, but as always, our points don't count.

Here is the Ichthyomancy pick table:

Time out...

From an article about the NL lineup tonight:

Jimenez will help; he is a remarkable 15-1 with a 2.20 ERA. Manuel said he also considered Florida Marlins right-hander Josh Johnson, who is 9-3 with a 1.70 ERA, but Manuel said Jimenez has been a top pitcher in the NL for years and deserved the honor.

Um…is he talking about the same Ubaldo Jimenez that I know? The one who was three games over .500 in his career before this season, with a high-3 ERA? In only three seasons. Josh Johnson pitched roughly the same amount, doesn’t even have 20 career losses (on some pretty bad teams mind you, whereas Jimenez has been on playoff teams most of that time), and has an ERA barely over 3.

Give me a break. Yeah, it was a tough choice who to start but that’s an ASININE reason.

Nice catch

It seems that Charlie manuel is the bobby Bowden of the MLB.

/cuestereotypicaloldmansoutheraccent

“that youbaldo sure can pitch boy, I tell ya. And slap my pappy that infante kid sure hits the ball. He went 5 for 4 one night and played every single position in the sane game dag nubbit. Joey lotto? Cincinatti still plays in the bigs? I thought they were a minor league ball club for the Cleveland… Browns it is? Let’s play some ball”

I could make a case for ubaldo over Johnson, but it could go either way. Pretty lame excuse on his part

i didnt have time to play this year.. it kind of took over my life last season.. and i couldnt enjoy some games the Marlins played. same reason i dont take F Football too seriously. i cant root for other players in dolphins games… because theres only 16 of them (maybe more this year).

Yahoo Sports, used it since 2002

With the limited number of innings they pitch

It’s hard to truly know how good they are. Arthur Rhodes and Luke Gregersen looked invincible, and now, neither can seemingly get out of a jam. It’s just not as dependable as using starters and closers.

yeah but

your denying players an opportunity to play in the all-star game just because they happen to do the best job relieving in the middle innings? thats not fair.
