Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: All-Star Game
The starting pitcher for the NL is Ubaldo Jimenez. The starting pitcher for the AL is David Price.
The festivities begin at 8:00 p.m. The game should start around 8:20 p.m.
Hanley Ramirez is the starting short stop for the NL, but you knew that already. Do expect to see Josh Johnson on the mound at some point in the game. Even Charlie Manuel isn't dumb enough to leave JJ in the pen. But I will say this Manuel has surprised me in the past, so we will see.
If you are looking for a fun place to hangout with others and watch the game, may we suggest the Marlins Watch Party at:
| Corona Watch Party Boomers! Greater Ft. Lauderdale 1700 NW 1st Street Dania Beach , FL 33004 |
We think Billy and the Mermaids will be there handing out prizes and just generally brightening up the place.
Ichthyomancy is slightly different in that you won't be making an attendance pick. What you will be deciding, if you choose to play, is whether the AL or NL will be victorious, the MVP of the game but take heart there will be two other players deemed point worthy other than the actual MVP. And also, the standard AAB pick is in play.
Since I have no idea what the participation rate will be tonight, your name will be added along with your picks when they are made. Or maybe to be more precise, when I get home from work or sometime there after. Once again you do not have to select a Marlin, you can if want, though it is not required. The points do count towards Ichthyomancy. GameFish and I play in this version of Ichthyomancy, but as always, our points don't count.
Here is the Ichthyomancy pick table:
| FishStriper | League | Player | AAB |
| Craig |
NL |
Infante |
Infante: grand slam |
| GameFish | NL | Votto | JJ: 2+ K |
| Bumppo | NL | Pujols | JJ: 2+ K; Hanley: 1+ H |
| Gatorfan4life | NL | Hanley | Hanley: HR |
| Guitarist | NL | Hanley | JJ: 3+ K |
| LadyFish | NL | Howard | Howard: HR |
| Spud | NL | Cantu | AL P: WP |
| Xquiles | NL | Braun | JJ: 1+ K |
| Bourbon | NL | Heyward | JJ: 1-2-3 inning |
| Dgriot | NL | Hanley | Game: no save |
| HadMatter | NL | Hanley | JJ: 0 ER; Hanley: MVP |
| Ocelotfox | NL | Pujols | Price IP > Jimenez IP |
| GMFB | NL | JJ | Game: 8+ XBH |

Best of Luck to You!

Josh Johnson for 2010 NL Cy Young!
Brandon Marshall is a Dolphin.....watch out World.
Time out...
From an article about the NL lineup tonight:
Jimenez will help; he is a remarkable 15-1 with a 2.20 ERA. Manuel said he also considered Florida Marlins right-hander Josh Johnson, who is 9-3 with a 1.70 ERA, but Manuel said Jimenez has been a top pitcher in the NL for years and deserved the honor.
Um…is he talking about the same Ubaldo Jimenez that I know? The one who was three games over .500 in his career before this season, with a high-3 ERA? In only three seasons. Josh Johnson pitched roughly the same amount, doesn’t even have 20 career losses (on some pretty bad teams mind you, whereas Jimenez has been on playoff teams most of that time), and has an ERA barely over 3.
Give me a break. Yeah, it was a tough choice who to start but that’s an ASININE reason.
Nice catch
It seems that Charlie manuel is the bobby Bowden of the MLB.

“that youbaldo sure can pitch boy, I tell ya. And slap my pappy that infante kid sure hits the ball. He went 5 for 4 one night and played every single position in the sane game dag nubbit. Joey lotto? Cincinatti still plays in the bigs? I thought they were a minor league ball club for the Cleveland… Browns it is? Let’s play some ball”
I could make a case for ubaldo over Johnson, but it could go either way. Pretty lame excuse on his part

A nice break from the hate
by Bourbon Meyer on Jul 13, 2010 8:54 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Price looked overpowering there
He’s been doing that all season. He may be a better lefty than the crafty Cliff Lee.
Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)
Jimenez looks like he doesn't have full control, could be disaster waiting to happen
Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)
That seems like a tough turn for players who don’t play together… Nicely done. Seen that screwed up a lot before

Howard goes down on strikes to a hard-throwing lefty
Big surprise.

Here's another of my fantasy team pitchers, Andy Pettite
So far, all three All-Star pitchers are on my team, lol.

Cliff Lee, 5th pitcher tonight, 4th on my fantasy team

i dont know how many people are in your league...
…but those seem like some pretty high draft picks… how do your position players look? Im always torn about going pitcher or batting heavy… i always seem to finish near the bottom :)
by Bourbon Meyer on Jul 13, 2010 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions
I have Miguel Cabrera, Robinson Cano, Hanley Ramirez, amongst others
We have twelve teams, but I’m very good at dealing players. Josh Hamilton got me a lot, lol.
Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)
Not quite
We play head-to-head, which I’d never played before this year, so I’m in second. But me and the guy in first place have a 20 game lead over the rest of the teams in the league.
Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)
We also have 20 categories, including holds and sacrifice hits
Which is why I loved Luke Gregersen until last week.
Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)
that sounds cool, which site do you use? ive never done more than 10 categories
i didnt have time to play this year.. it kind of took over my life last season.. and i couldnt enjoy some games the Marlins played. same reason i dont take F Football too seriously. i cant root for other players in dolphins games… because theres only 16 of them (maybe more this year).
by Bourbon Meyer on Jul 13, 2010 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Yahoo Sports, used it since 2002
It’s been a great past few years, I’ve enjoyed playing in leagues where we count OBP, K/9, BB/9, etc. Adds more strategy to the mix.
Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)
thats cool
I always go pitching heavy, but its actually been a terrible year for pitching for me. I also have Cabrera and Cano. love those guys. I’ve had Miguel Cabrera on my team since day one in the big leagues for him.

This is why you don't let middle relievers go to the All-Star game
Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)
why not?
Middle relieves deserve to be all-stars.

With the limited number of innings they pitch
It’s hard to truly know how good they are. Arthur Rhodes and Luke Gregersen looked invincible, and now, neither can seemingly get out of a jam. It’s just not as dependable as using starters and closers.
Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)
yeah but
your denying players an opportunity to play in the all-star game just because they happen to do the best job relieving in the middle innings? thats not fair.

It's just that those kind of guys are a dime a dozen
Evan Meek, Scott Downs, Mike Adams, Arthur Rhodes, Clay Hensley, Luke Gregersen, Hong-Chi Kuo, etc.
You can’t reward all of them.

With Joe Buck and Tim McCarver
As if you weren’t already tired of them!
Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)
You think Joe buck ever gets tired of himself thinking he's so great?
Nah, he probably just taps himself on his right shoulder with his left hand and introduces himself.. To himself.
Btw I can’t stand the guy

Longoria walked, Kuo committed a throwing error to first
Allowing Longoria to go to third and the batter (Mauer) to get to second, sacrifice fly by Robbie Cano.

Buck talked him up a bit, too
Good bit of exposure for our stud.

I'd like to see heyward in there
He’s my pick or MVP!

That relievers aren’t good in the All-Star game.

Adam Wainwright and his devastating curveball

Because Matt Holliday would feel bad about making another big gaffe
In a clutch situation, ala 2009 NLDS.

Great job covering your teammate, Wainwright!

Seriously, Young, Bourn, and Byrd are just chasing everything
Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)
JJ also threw more pitches than any other pitcher
29 total, without allowing a single baserunner in two innings, which only Brian Wilson was also able to do through a full inning.
It was a very impressive night for Josh, to be sure.
