Stanton's Far From Ready

Mike Stanton, The Natural who was supposed to be the Marlins' savior, is obviously not ready for Prime Time. Stanton is striking out at an alarming 50% rate; one out of every two at bats is a strike out. People were calling Cameron Maybin a strike out machine; Stanton is way ahead of Maybin in strike out ratio. Well, I did not expect this 20 year old kid to come in here and save the Marlins' season; I was more realistic than that, I figured the kid would struggle a bit. But what's happening here cannot be called "struggling a bit". Night after night, regardless of who is the opposing pitcher, Stanton looks completely over matched. And here's the alarming part: pitchers are not just getting him out on major league breaking stuff. That would be expected. No, the really troubling part about Stanton's struggles is that pitchers are blowing fastballs by him. And I'm not talking about 100 mph heaters, either. Pitchers re blowing him away with low 90s fastballs. This is a really bad sign, because you can learn to hit the curve ball, but you can't learn to hit fastballs. Either you have the bat speed and the hand eye coordination or you don't.

I was going to say that at least his hitting woes have not affected him out in the field, but that went down the drain tonight. The pitcher was batting with two strikes and a man on 3rd base. JJ needs a strikeout here to keep that on 3rd base from scoring on an out. The pitcher lofts a fly ball foul down the right field line. Stanton charges the ball hard and...he makes the catch! The only problem was that the runner on 3rd was able to tag up and score easily as Stanton was in no position after the running catch to make any kind of a throw to the plate. Padres lead 2-1. Obviously Stanton should have let the ball drop and give JJ another shot at striking the pitcher out, almost a sure thing. By making that catch Stanton not only allowed what turned out to be the game winning run score, he cost JJ his consecutive game streak of allowing only one run or less. The kid's head was not in the game; probably dwelling on his poor hitting. And to add insult to injury, he struck out three times in the game, including looking for the final out.

At this point, the kid is not helping the team here and not helping himself. As the Ks mount, his confidence plummets. The Marlins need to send him back down to the minors, but to AAA this time, not AA. He should face a better grade of pitcher in AAA than he did in AA where he was killing them. And they might as well bring Cameron Maybin back who at least only struck out once every four at bats. He did show some flashes here and there. At any rate Maybin is much closer to being ready that Stanton, of that there is no doubt. The numbers don't lie.

I agree 100%

I’m glad to see am not the only one asking to have Maybin back. I will concede that Maybin had his issues, but he was becoming a more consistent hitter. You could see Maybin progress and get better every single game.

So what did we get by replacing Maybin with Stanton? We have probably missed out on a few home runs and certainly a few singles and doubles.

I don’t care if Stanton will be a power hitter in 4 or 5 years, right now the kid doesn’t have the stuff, and until he learns to hit better, we should send him back to AAA. I’m sure Stanton will make a great Marlin, just not this season, and probably not the next either.

I think Stanton just needs to go back to AAA, let the kid get his confidence make, work out some of those ugly kinks.

looking at the numbers.....

maybin’s avg dropped from .247 – .211 – .176 april-may-june.

stanton has half as many BBs, RBIs & SBs as maybin in only one third of the ABs.

not saying stanton is tearing it up (.213/.279) but maybin (.225/.290) really wasnt any better. especially when you consider his numbers gradually got worse.

Don't ever read into trends in numbers

That being said, I generally agree. Stanton and Maybin both looked bad, but we had to expect Stanton to flounder to some degree. He struck out in 27% of his PA in the minors, what did you expect would happen in the big leagues?

Look, the 43% or so rate should go down, but it shouldn’t surprise anyone. At this point, our options are limited anyway.

take a giant step back

the kids had what like 14 games or so? give him a break. everyone takes a little bit to get adjusted. And don’t forget, he was in AA, not in AAA facing better talent. He will come around, he has to if he is the “next best thing.” Have to be patient.

Stanton/Maybin

Seriously, give the guy a minute. He’s 20 and jumping a level.

Also, I disagree that Maybin should be recalled — under almost any circumstance — until past the All-Star break or even September. Getting regular playing time in a relatively non-pressurized situation where he can improve his plate discipline is what the guy really needs.

If Stanton really proves not to be ready in a month, he can drop down to AAA New Orleans and either Carroll or Petersen (or someone outside the organization) should be the alternative.

bet you’d love Stanton, Maybin and Morrison all raking in AAA.

Stanton

Stanton is a bust at this point and the longer this kid is in the line up at this level the confidence gets lower. He needs to go to AAA to build up the confindence level and bring him back in September.

In Baseball, the term Stanton shall be known as...

a over-hyped minor league player who replaces a better player (Maybin) and completely falls apart, creating a black hole in the offense and defense, and costing the team valuable wins.

Good riddance Stanton…bring back Maybin. At least Maybin’s Ave. was going up towards the end and the kid was starting to hit home runs.

I imagine you said the same for Chris Coghlan, who didn’t top .200 consistently until after a month in the majors . How’d that end up?

The point is, baseball is not football, results often take more than two seasons of ABs to determine. So give the kid a break, and adjust your expectations to reality. If after another few weeks he’s still having trouble, he’ll probably head down to AAA, but jeez, to call the #3 prospect of the year a bust because he isn’t raking after a month is ludicrous.

Chris Coghlan is NLRoY 2009 (that's a +1 for me!)

Wow

Hype backlash much? Just a few weeks ago EVERYONE wanted Stanton in the majors, and almost no one would support keeping Maybin. Now that he struggles for 2+ weeks, he’s done for?

We as fans need to understand how to be patient. Not everyone bursts on the scene like Jason Heyward. Don’t expect it.

Big Mike

Can Stanton learn to hit major league pitching in the minors? He could go down and hit a ton of homers, and still have the same problem whenever he comes back to the Marlins. I’d love to see Stanton, Maybin and Bonifacio play every day for the second half of the season…in preparation for next season when some of this year’s starters are gone.

Stanton haters.....chill.

Stanton is the real deal. Sure he strikes out a lot but he’s starting to come around a bit more each week. In fact, he has only one strikeout in 4 games since the All Star break. Don’t be suprised if he hits 20 homeruns before the season ends. Give this kid a chance now to cut his teeth and it’ll pay off next year. The Marlins aren’t going anywhere this year. Let the young kids play and lets see what we’ve got.

Besides, who ever said Stanton was a savior? That’s ridiculous. I call BS on the original post. It has never been suggested by anyone with half a brain that Stanton was going to save this team. The guy is as ready for the show as Heyward is.
