Clay Hensley is placed on bereavement list

Shortly after turning in another impressive outing on Friday, Marlins reliever Clay Hensley returned to the clubhouse, checked the messages on his cellphone and went numb with the news that was awaiting him: the unexpected death of his father.

Hensley left the team immediately to be with family, and on Saturday the Marlins placed the right-hander on the bereavement list and called up left-handed pitcher Hunter Jones from Triple A New Orleans to take his spot on the roster.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez said sympathetic team owner Jeffrey Loria and president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest were quick to tell Hensley to go be with his family and ``Don't worry about us right now.''

It's uncertain how long Hensley will be away from the team, but players on the bereavement list must remain on it for a minimum of three days and no more than seven.

My condolences to Clay and his family.

He’s been dominant in relief this year. I look forward to his return.
