Volstad's endurance???

It's becoming obvious that Volstad's stuff becomes much worst in the 6th/7th inning. Freddi and Randy St. Claire must be very cautious with him once he enters the 6th. With Badenhop pitching so well, he should always be lined up and prepared to enter the game in the 6th and pitch 2 innings after Volstad's start. Give Volstad a couple more seasons but, he is not ready to go deep in games yet.

if only it were that simple

- the only way he can have some endurance is to stretch him out when it makes sense. a 4 run lead in the 7th, at home with 8-9-1 coming up was the perfect spot.

- if youre going to plan to take him out after only 5-6 IPs every start then the bullpen will be done by july. esp. when the team is already struggling to get quality starts from JJ & ricky (1 QS in 4 total starts).

- you cant just plan to have hopper come in for all volstads starts. not that simple.

- high schoolers can go past 100 pitches in starts. many starters in the japanese league go 125+ pitches. the problem is the minors put them on regiments that basically untrain their arms to handle a lot of IPs with major game & season pitch/IP counts.

our SPs have a lot of talent & if they can work thru things early in their career then they can become good pitchers who can throw 200 IPs a year. IE beckett, burnett, penny, johnson, nolasco

3 Long Relievers

I agree with what your saying we can’t tax our bullpen throughout the season, and this is the weakest Marlins bullpen I can recall in a long time. But, we can’t gamble on leads throughout the season either. I see we have 3 Long Relievers in Badenhop, Hensley, and Vandenhurk (if needed). Just spread those guys out.

Truth be told, every pitcher gets worse as the game wears on

The Book did a study which showed that pitchers get worse the more time they go through the order, until the 4th+ time, in which they actually get back to the average. So if your pitcher is in the third time through the order, no matter when that is, you have to consider how much worse you think he’ll be compared to your reliever of choice.

For Volstad, his third time through the order is probably much worse than Hopper, Hensley, or most of the other guys out of the pen. The problem is he’s allowing so many baserunners that it’s happening really early in the game, around the late in the fourth inning into the fifth. He needs to be more effective early, otherwise he’ll get pounded late.
