K-Lero is a Met

MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that the Mets have signed Kiko Calero to a minor league contract.

The Mets signed Kiko Calero to a minor league deal, according to Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News (via Twitter). Calero had been looking for a major league deal, so the Mets deserve credit for adding him on a minor league contract.

You can officially let go of whatever shred of hope you were still holding onto where K-Lero was concerned.

The only words that come to mind in light of this news are ones that I am contractually prohibited to print on an SB Nation blog. And so I will leave the discussion to you.

Bummer.

Of course, given the Mets’ recent track record with free-agent relievers, perhaps we shouldn’t be too worried?

Ooo, looking at the bright side.

I like it! Probably won’t be adopting that mentality as my own or anything, but still…

What?

I could see if they overpaid him, but a minor-league contract? Why? Were the Marlins not willing to offer him a guaranteed major-league deal?

It's a good thing Larry Bird's initials weren't MJ. '80s basketball was confusing enough -- Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Marles Jarkley, Mominique Jilkins... Makeem Jolajuwon...

I think he would have been "out of options"

so if they signed him to a Major league contract and they determined at any point he should be in the minors for some time, they’d have to pass him through waivers. They’d also have to pay him Major League Salary if he was on rehab or the DL, which we all know they hate to do.

Still

$500,000 or whatever isn’t that much. And if they did decide they didn’t want him around, and someone claimed him off waivers, that takes him off the books, right?

Oh, well. Frustrating.

oh well

he was a nice piece outta the pen, for sure. It’s not our style to pay relievers, but i kinda wish they would’ve given him just enough to get him to stay.

hopefully one of our new guys (Macdougal or Turnbow) can pick up his slack and the team will be fine
