Wood and VandenHurk Optioned, Rotation Set

Just Kidding.

Shortly after this afternoon's announcement that Nate Robertson and lots of cash had been acquired from the Tigers for Jay Voss, the Marlins optioned both Tim Wood and Rick VandenHurk to AAA New Orleans. The Marlins starting rotation is now set:

The starting rotation will be -- Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco, Anibal Sanchez, Chris Volstad and Robertson.

Clay Hensley is making the team as a long reliever, instead of the fifth starter.

Horrible

Clay had an awesome spring training and should have been rewarded with the 5 spot. Giving up a great prospect just to have a lefty in the rotation is ridiculous, especially with the way Hensley has been pitching. Now Clay will probably lose his morale and lose games out of the pen when he could have won 20 games as a starter.

Lol I’m sure he’ll be fine… Hopefully Robertson can help hold the rotation together… If not then I’m sure Hensley, West, or Miller will get a shot at some point

You do realize this is Clay Hensley, right?

And that Spring Training means nothing?

Bless you boys

After reading some of stuff from the Detroit side, I’m starting to think we get the better part of the deal.

Well, that all depends on how Maybin develops.

It’s hard to argue against Cabrera, though.

not much to lose with this trade

low risk if true that detroit paid over 9m of the 10m owed for this season

better hope he pitches at home a lot though.
‘07-’09 ERA: H-4.51 A-6.78; (vs NL 4.66)
lefties have also had a better BA than righties in that same period so its good? that he’s a lefty

bunch of opportunities for nate/marlins here: can become reliable/average 5th SP, LHP out of bullpen, revert to ‘06 form (1.28 ERA vs NL in ’06), or continue to be inconsistent & wait until west/hurk/miller can spot start for him…… we’ll see

I'm blind

I blindly take whatever the FO does and support it. However, I think that Hensley as the long reliever really helps us out in the bullpen. We should have less issues there this year, which is a substantial upgrade from last year. Also, I don’t think we can downplay any pitcher coming from the AL and moving to the NL. That move is always huge. And I like the idea of a 5th being a lefty with no other lefty pitchers. Call me crazy. I have high hopes for this year. 90+ Ws

AL to NL move

I don’t think we can downplay any pitcher coming from the AL and moving to the NL. That move is always huge.

Why is that?

When the roof happens, it will rain. For now, we can enjoy games at Joe Robbie/Pro Player/Dolphins/Dolphin/Landshark/Sun Life/[your name here] Stadium.

AL to NL

the AL is typically defined by more offense and smaller stadiums. Fenway, Comerica, Yankees, these are all launch pads. Sun Life is the absolute opposite. Granted, the Phillies have cape canaveral to play at. But I think facing teams with a pitcher in the batting lineup and just less overall offense is a godsend for any pitcher switching leagues.

Loss of the DH always helps

Facing pitchers twice a game is much easier than facing DH’s.

Plus the AL is a better league right now, though that effect may be more of a pitching thing.

Also, the batters don't know this guy.

Situations with limited knowledge always favor the pitcher.

Don't Forget

Hensley hasn’t pitched in the majors for a few years, and he wasn’t that good when he did. I’m high on his spring stats too, but I’m OK with him getting regular work in the pen, proving his skills have matured, and if someone falters in the rotation him jumping up.

Same with Nate – if he falters int eh rotation, he spent a lot of time in the bullpen last year in detroit. I’d take him over Pinto.

hensley pitched 90 IPs past 2 seasons. though not very effective he was on a mlb roster both years

why would robertson automatically be better in the pen than pinto??? detroit paid 9m just to get rid of the guy. besides, pinto had a 3.23 era in 60 IPs last year. thats really good. if he can improve on his walk numbers he can easily have sub-3 era.
