Wild Wild West Optioned to New Orleans

Sean West didn't fare so well in Saturday's B game against the Orioles. And by "didn't fare so well," I mean "sucked real bad."

West walked seven batters in just 1 2/3 innings, and he might have walked a few more had the game not been halted--twice--in order to stop the bleeding. Saturday's seven walks brought West's grand total to 10 free passes in just 3 2/3 innings this spring.

Sean must be a glass-is-half-full kind of guy, because after the game, he pointed to his 1-2-3 second inning as a positive take from the otherwise wild outing. The Marlins appear to be a bit less optimistic at the moment, though; they optioned West to AAA New Orleans this morning.

There isn't much doubt that he'll be back at some point, but while West works on his command, the Marlins have at least narrowed the competition for the final two spots in the rotation. Miller, Penn, VandenHurk and Volstad will duke it out for those, because after Anibal's four scoreless innings against the Mets Sunday, the number three spot appears to have his name on it.

In other news, the Marlins optioned Jose Ceda to AA Jacksonville.

This makes sense.

Nothing against Sean, but he’s clearly the least polished of our pitchers at this point. Not the least talented — that’d be Penn — but the one who was most rushed to the majors last year.

Was glad to see Sanchez put together a strong outing… he was probably our no. 3 guy going into spring training, so if he puts a couple more good games together, odds are he’s got the spot locked up.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Miller was the next to go… he’s looked pretty bad so far. Volstad hasn’t looked that much better, but with Miller, you’ve got the delivery issues, which we all know have to be figured out. I feel like Volstad has a somewhat longer leash in terms of bad ST outings.

I’d like to say VandenHurk has a good shot… only thing that worries me is, he hasn’t started either of his ST games. I can’t imagine the team thinks of him as a long reliever… maybe they’re pulling the trigger early on the West move so that they can give VH a pre-season rotation spot?

EEESH!

I have been following the foibles of the Natinals from a distance and see their pitching staff in near total disarray. But the Marlins don’t seem to have a lot of answers about their starting rotation either, and their choices for the bullpen about as cloudy.

I keep telling myself “it’s still early”, but the calendar has been ticking away and the hits just keep on coming (against the Fish).

Meanwhile, Derek Lowe pitches a beauty today. So much for it still being early. EEESH.

When the roof happens, it will rain. For now, we can enjoy games at Joe Robbie/Pro Player/Dolphins/Dolphin/Landshark/Sun Life/[your name here] Stadium.

almost possitive they’ll call West back up by the summer.. but im praying that Penn doesnt make the rotation, the guy was horrible last year in all the games I personally saw him in

The last 2 rotation spots are gonna go to Volstad and Hensley IMO

Hensley?

I’m not under the impression Hensley is even being considered for a rotation spot. He’s got a good shot at making it into the bullpen, though…

And why would either one of them make the rotation over VandenHurk, who pitched effectively last year, and who’s done everything you could ask of a guy in spring training so far?

dam your right..

forgot for a about VandenHurk.. and they were considering Hensley for the rotation (well as a spot starter/long reliever) kind of what Badenhop does and Miller did for a bit

Huh.

And I guess VandenHurk blew his first actual start… still like him for the spot, and still kind of expect Hensley to end up in the bullpen.

I hope there’s enough room for him AND Badenhop.
