Marlins reach contract agreements with several players

Just got this text message.

The Marlins have reached 2010 contracts with RHP's Jay Buente, Jose Ceda and Brett Sinkbell, C Brett Hayes and INF's Jorge Jimenez and Gaby Sanchez.

That's great, but am I missing something here?  All of these guys are still under team control and the Marlins can pay them whatever the team wants to, as long as it is at least the league the minimum.  So what confuses me is the word "reached".  There is no reach, there is no negotiation, but I guess reached sounds nicer in a message than assigned.

But whatever, the boys are going to get paid.

Does this mean all these guys have guaranteed major-league deals now?

Because that doesn’t seem right… some of them have never even played in the majors, and some of them might not this year either.

It's a good thing Larry Bird's initials weren't MJ. '80s basketball was confusing enough -- Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Marles Jarkley, Mominique Jilkins... Makeem Jolajuwon...
