Marlins Sign Derrick Turnbow

It just wouldn't be a new season if the Marlins weren't attempting to revive the career of a fallen closer.

The Fish have signed Derrick Turnbow to a Minor League deal with an invitation to Spring Training. Jose Veras and Danny Richar also signed Minor League deals with the Marlins.

Adding experienced depth to the bullpen has been a priority for the Marlins.

The club took a step in addressing that area on Friday by coming to terms with Derrick Turnbow.

The Marlins noted on Friday they have Minor League deals with Turnbow, right-hander Jose Veras and infielder Danny Richar.

All three have big league invitations.

Turnbow didn't see any Big League action last season, after a disastrous 2008 in which he pitched just 6.1 innings--with god-awful results--before an MRI revealed he had a torn labrum. Um, good stuff. But hey, he was real good five years ago, and should the Marlins' attempt at career revival miraculously work out (and it doesn't work out just as often as it does), Leo Nunez could end up with a little competition.

It's a minor-league contract.

Clearly, he’s been injured, but it’s basically no risk. If he comes into camp and he’s a big-league pitcher, cool. If not, never mind.

Same thing with Veras, really… though I think we have more evidence to support the fact that Veras is at least a solid middle reliever. (He’s another guy with control problems, though. Can’t we get a situational reliever who has a problem OTHER than walking people?)

It's a good thing Larry Bird's initials weren't MJ. '80s basketball was confusing enough -- Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Marles Jarkley, Mominique Jilkins... Makeem Jolajuwon...

and now Seth McClung!

Sure, we could just get one guy who’s great (Kiko) but why not get five terrible guys instead! QUANTITY BABY!

I don't get why we can't just sign Kiko to a one year deal

If our FO is so worried about his arm getting hurt, then maybe we just shouldn’t overuse him like we did early in last year. Even if we only get 50 IP out of him because of arm troubles I’m sure it’d still be a great deal for only around 2 mil.

And hopefully the team saw some kind of upside in all these relievers that us the fans don’t know about. Because right now all it looks like is we’ve signed 5 more Tim Woods.

There's no such thing as a great reliever.

There are solid relievers and bad relievers, that’s all.

I was going to counterpoint you, but...

You’re pretty much right. I can’t think of a reliever who has put together four or five good seasons in a row. It’s so topsy-turvy.

Yeah, there are a few.

I was exaggerating.

But if you look at Calero’s career, he’s a 3.50 ERA guy — the same as, well, a hundred other relievers around the league. It’s not surprising that relief ERAs fluctuate so wildly from season to season… by starter standards, they basically pitch around 6 weeks worth of baseball a year. If you took a starter and broke his ERA down into 50-inning stretches, you’d probably find some great ones, and some bad ones as well. And when you’re in a situation where going out there and giving up two runs is going to increase your season ERA by almost half a run, that’s going to result in some awfully fluky stats.

Which is not to say that Calero isn’t good. But he’s a middle reliever, not a wizard.

Yea you're pretty much 100% right

This is why I think it’s hilarious when someone like Brandon Lyon, who’s been pretty much your average middle relief pitcher his whole career, goes out in ’09 and has a lucky year (.229 BABIP) and ends up with a 2.86 ERA / 4.06 FIP. Next thing you know the Astros give him a 3 year $15mil contract. Incredible…
