Who are our rivals?

Hey guys, I'm a Dolphin-Marlin-Heat fan. Some of you may know me from the Phinsider (Dolphins blog). About a month ago, I put this post up on Peninsula is Mightier (Heat blog), but I forgot to do it here, so here goes:

Who are our rivals? I honestly have no idea. I do know that some division rivals may include the Phillies, Braves, and Mets. But who else? Which is our BIGGEST rival? And is there any team outside of the division, or a team that I did not mention above?

Thanks, GO MARLINS!!!

I think we're supposed to be rivals with tampa

But i don’t really feel any tension whenever we play them, it always seems like just another inter-league game. I’d say NYM is our arch enemy, which is cool since we’ve ruined their season a couple of times.

I wish there was a rival there between our team and theirs, but all they care about is the yankees as their rival. maybe the phils

Living in the Philly area, I’ll say that Philly fans really hate the Mets and view the Fish as more of a novelty. I think Marlins fans should go and steal the Braves mascot or something to start a rivalry with Atlanta

I would have to say the Braves...

The Mets and Phillies seem to have their own thing going on between them.. And it seems like every game we play against the Braves theres always some type of animosity there, whether that be from hit batters or umpires missing the strike zone (which seems to happen in almost every FLA vs. ATL game lol)

And just for the record, I just want it to be know that I HATE the braves with a passion (all of them: Chipper, Escobar, McCann, Diaz, etc.)… cant stand them lol. I’m usually fine with every team even if they’re our rivals but theres something about the Braves I just cant stand, and the Mets aren’t that far off either (I blame their fans for that tho).. Phillies and Nats are ok in my book.

Rivals-a radical future prediction

is that the two elite teams in the NL East over the next several years will be the Marlins and the Nationals so I predict the Nationals will become our main future rival.

Memories of all those obnoxious Mets and Phillies fans packing JR stadium will linger, of course.

I personally don’t feel much animosity with the Braves fans like I do with the Mets and Phillies. The Mets and Phillies fans always seem like grotesque subhuman toad like freaks while the Braves fans seem almost human.

In terms of Tampa Bay I wish we would start taking this rivalry more seriously because they took 5 out of 6 from us last year.

Otherwise the Cubs are a nice team to beat and the Dodgers fans seemed to be trying to stir something up against us last year. They both have their share of obnoxious fans when they come to play.

omg, i forgot about the nationals being in our division, thats how bad they are, i guess, lol

Braves...

Then Mets. Wish we played the Yankees more. We pwned :em last year. ;-)

I figured

that if any “pwnage” would be brought up regarding Marlins/Yankees, it’d have to be the ’03 World Series.

Not making excuses because the Marlins clearly beat the Yankees 2 of 3, but that series was the series before the Yankees completely turned their season around. Yankees were in a midst of losing 9 of 13, and they won 64 of 92 to finish the season, after that series.

As far as this question goes, I’d have to figure the Mets biggest rival is Philly. Those two teams have a way of always frustrating the hell out of each other, from my perspective. I mean, the Fish won 7 of 9 in Philly in 2009, but lost 7 of 9 at home? WTF?

As of the last few years I'd rank them this way

Not necassarily “rivals”, but the most interesting experience from a Marlins standpoint.

Phillies
Mets
Braves
Yankees
Cubs
TB
Pitts
.
.
.
.
.
Nats

Well...

I’d sat Atlanta… but I’ve hated Atlanta since before ’93, so that might color my perceptions. Outside of the NLEast, I can only think of Colorado, the other 93 expansion team.

Truth be told, rivalries a borne from tradition, and it’s harder to start such a tradition with teams, coverage and the league itself becoming more “national” and less “regional.”

by Jigokusabre on Jan 22, 2010 1:39 PM EST reply actions

Its Atlanta for sure.

Fuck the Braves. nobody else in our division really likes us because we fuck their seasons over so often. we really singlehandedly killed the braves playoff hopes this year by beating them in almost every series we played against them. it was immensly satisfying to finish 2nd in the NL east ahead of the Braves.

By that logic

wouldn’t that make the Mets the “biggest” rival?

The Fish screwed their 2007 and 2008 seasons.

by FloridaownsFSU on Jan 23, 2010 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

and your completely right.....

were very good at ruining our rival’s postseason hopes if we dont make it there ourselves (yes i include myself as part of the team lol).. if we cant get in then we gotta make sure nobody else from our division does

I’d have to say that tagging Matt Diaz out at third on the last play of the last game against the Braves in ’09 was one of the biggest highlights of the season for me hahahaha GO FISH!!!

Braves?

It’s kind of hard to hate the braves. Before the marlins all we had was the braves on what was that channel..TBS? I’d say the mets due to the fact their fans have invaded south florida like roaches.

Nats...

Just kidding. They come in tiers for me:

Tier 1: Mets, Phillies, Braves
2: Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox
3: Rays, Nats, Rockies
4: D-Backs(only because I’m in their AAA town)

Go Nevada Wolf Pack!

by BacksThePack on Feb 2, 2010 9:59 AM EST reply actions

Besides the fourth one obviously, i like this list

I would probably leave off boston though since besides the Hanley trade we don’t have much history with them. And hopefully in a couple years the Rays can move into tier 1 or 2… I think once we both get new stadiums it could turn into a big time rivalry.

New York Mets

Hear me out.

I like to say that Miami has a rivalry with New York. If you look at it, it is easy to argue the rivalry between the Dolphins and Jets (AFC East, prior to the Pats… man, just ask Marino about this one).

All you have to do is go back to the late 90s to see the rivalry between the Heat and Knicks. Has there been any better since?

And the past few years, knocking the Mets out of the playoffs has been great (and caused much anger from NYM fans).

This is from living in NYC for a few years and seeing it first hand as I always wore a Marlins hat or Dolphins jersey when watching games or walking around the city.

But I must say, the Phillies and Braves are equally as bad.

by Dallas Marlin on Feb 5, 2010 8:32 PM EST reply actions

yeah this is true

I consider this true between Miami and Atlanta as well. whenever sports teams from these city’s play, nobody likes each other. in Baseball and Basketball, we all hate the Atlanta Braves and Hawks, in Football, we do not like the Falcons. its just sort of a natural city rivalry, seeing as Miami and Atlanta are the nearest citys to each other that contain all the major sports. you have to travel all the way up to Washington or New Orleans for the same thing, and they are of course several states away.

If I had to pick one team, I would say the Braves.

They aren’t fond of us. We aren’t fond of them. Sparks were flying all last year whenever the two teams faced each other.

But, it’s close.

This is coming from someone who lives surrounded by Phillies fans. While they are…well…Phillies fans, I agree with the person that said that they don’t really take us seriously and they don’t put us on the same level as the Mets and the Braves (despite the fact that we have the best record in the NL East against them over the past three years…)

The Mets certainly have the pains of 2007 and 2008, but they seem to blame it on the Phillies more than the Marlins. They would come in at a close second.

The Nationals are too busy trying to put together a winning season and are really too new to have a real rival. However, the Nationals fans that I know always seem especially keen to rub it in my face whenever they beat the Marlins, probably because we pound them to death on a consistent basis. If they return to respectability, I can see something happening here.

Outside the NL East, I’d say the team we have the biggest spats with are the Cubs. The goat thing this year did not help. Marlins fans constantly shouting “Steve Bartman!” at the Cubs does not help. Series against the Dodgers also seem to be pretty dramatic.

I don’t see anything significant happening with the Rays unless we meet in a World Series.
