Jim Thome
Has anybody noticed Jim Thome is still a free agent? What a grab for the Fish!
Pinch hitter, first base, whatever. He is who he is. Spend our money. Go for the good ones without just writing it off as being too expensive. Sometimes you get what you pay for. Go for the Gold!
If we can't get a great pitcher, then get a great hitter. He healed up the end of last season and got some great coaching from a good team. Is it too much to ask?

Yes, let's play Thome at first base
Nevermind the fact that he’s played a whopping four games in the field in the last four seasons, and zero over the past two. Surely that’s just some weird coincidence and he’ll be totally fine at first.

If he was gonna play for us he'd basically have the same role Gload had
There’s no way in hell we’d pay the money Thome wants just to be a LH bat off the bench.

E-4
The Fish already have a terrible infield without parking a DH on 1B.

sorry, but no way
much rather the fish spend it on keeping some of our pitching here in miami or signing a few above average relief pitchers.
you go after bench/util players when you already have solid lineup & rotation… the fish arent quite there yet

i dont really follow other teams that closely...
but did Russell Branyan leave Seattle because he was asking for more money? Cause i think he would be great to replace Ross Gload as a left-handed bat off the bench.. only problem I read was that he might be looking for more than a 1 year deal, but the Marlins seem to be spending a bit more so could this be a possibility?

Uh, I'm not sure if you know what Russ Branyan wants.
He wants to be a starter. He thinks he proved himself enough last year to earn a starting job (and he did). There’s no way he accepts a bench role unless we’re well into Spring Training and he hasn’t been signed.
Guys, stop worrying about the bench. The bench is fine. More importantly, the bench isn’t all that important.

Branyan
IIRC, I believe the sticking point with him was that he wanted 2 years from Seattle, while the Mariners were only offering 1. With Morrison waiting in the wings, I don’t think the Fish would offer 2 years either. The Mariners signed Kotchmann, meaning Branyan is prolly done for good with them. Shame too, cuz he had a career year with them. But, if he were to sign one year with the Fish, he wouldn’t be a bench guy. I can’t see why he wouldn’t start at 1st. In fact, considering the fact that Branyan bats left and Sanchez right, they could form an almost-league average type of platoon at 1st.

oh ok
i didnt know if he wanted to be a starter or not (didnt really look into it but heard his name out there alot). I dont really mind if we get another bench player, my main concern is the bullpen and from what I see it doesnt look like it will be any better than last years.

Yeah, I think it was a given that he would start in Seattle, as they didn’t really have any else to challenge the spot. Given that they traded for Kotchmann, it appears that Seattle wasn’t afraid of starting an inferior hitting first baseman everyday.

Thome
is not going to become a PH extraordinaire, when he still has something left to give with his bat, as a DH in the American League.
That stint with the Dodgers was for only 2 months, and for a World Series contending team (at least, that’s how they were viewed). I don’t think the Marlins are that good yet.

Branyan
In last week’s Rumblings and Grumblings, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark speculated that the still-unemployed Russell Branyan made sense as a fit for the Marlins. Stark is now hearing that the Marlins offered Branyan a one-year big-league deal with a low base and lots of incentives.
But Branyan is still looking for an opportunity that would offer him more assurance of playing time and more guaranteed money. His 31 homers last year were the most of any free agent who remains unsigned. But no contending team appears to be actively looking for an every-day first baseman.
The Marlins would envision Branyan as a left-handed bat off the bench who could wind up seeing a lot of playing time if they decide this spring that their two rookie first basemen, Logan Morrison and Gaby Sanchez, aren’t ready.

Getting him would be a good move i think
I could see a Gaby/Branyan platoon working out at 1st until Logan’s ready, and then we could just flip him at the deadline for a prospect or two.
