It's been a great run this year, but we have been officially eliminated from playoff contention. We lasted until 9/30/2009 at 12:14am Eastern time this year when the Rockies' Chris Iannetta hit a pinch hit walk-off 2-run homer in the bottom of the 11th against the Brewers. Beating an incredibly hot Braves team wasn't enough tonight, unfortunately. The Brew Crew prolonged our execution tonight when Jason Kendall hit a 3-run homer off of Rockies' closer Hudson Street to make it 5-all in the top of the 9th.
Since the Marlins have 4 games left, we have played 158 games and thus made it longer than last year when we were eliminated in our 157th game. The leaders of the races this year have better records than those that eliminated us last year so even making it to our 157th game was impressive.
The Braves are 3 games behind the Rockies so the best we can do to spoil them is to beat them tomorrow. If the Rockies win, that will put Atlanta at 4 games back with 4 to go, not to mention bring us within a game and a half of second place. One more win and we will beat our record from last year. If it's any consolation, the Cubs were also eliminated with the Rockies' victory and 8 teams in the NL were eliminated before us (out of the 12 that will be eliminated).
All in all, not too shabby. Hold your heads high Marlins, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Let's finish strong. Go Fish!
