Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Braves at Marlins (9/3)
Atlanta Braves at Florida Marlins, Sep 3, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
The Marlins are looking to split the series with the Braves.
Since I'm running incredibly behind, I will let the above speak for itself.
Ichthyomancy is kinda, sorta, ready to go.
Best of Luck to You!

man, these promos for the Cleveland Show are REALLY unfunny.
and considering how unfunny American Dad is, I’m not holding out hope on this one, either.

I don't know why
I think family guy crosses my line too many often… but I’m sooner to stop surfing the channels if Family GUy is on over AD… if that makes sense

Maybe it begins to show the organization that BC is the right guy

Let's face it...
…ultimately, neither one of ‘em is the right guy. Maybe Carroll as a fourth outfielder, though you’d really rather have a guy who can play CF. (I wouldn’t be shocked if Carroll could learn to do this… he’s a good defender.) But neither one has hit well enough to justify a starting corner outfield role.
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

That's where I'd want him too
But even as a starter he’s an upgrade from Hermida.

Eh.
As hitters, they’ve been just about identical this year. Carroll is obviously the better defender. But you also have to take Carroll’s past into consideration — he’s been decent this year, but in 07-08, he was unimaginably awful as a hitter.
I feel like you play him over Hermida because Hermida doesn’t have a future with the team, given that he’s a FA soon, and he’s played enough that you know he’s not that good. Whereas we need to figure out whether Carroll does, and we have him for a couple more years anyway. But as far as what they actually do, I don’t feel they’re that different one way or the other.
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

even pinto can't screw this one up.
er…at least not easily.

Shockingly, the guy with the 3.18 ERA gets out of the inning.
No earned runs allowed. Same way as 47 of his 60 appearances this year have ended.
(Even if he had allowed his season high in runs, we still would’ve been up by 3.)
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

and leo nunez has a 3.86 ERA.
Does that 47-of-60 stat include inherited runners scoring? How many baserunners does he allow? I just took a quick look at his stats over the last week, and he’s allowed a walk in 6 of his last 7 outings. They may not score, but it’s usually not an easy inning.
Admittedly, he’s having a much better season than last year, but i still have little faith in the guy and don’t want him in there in a close game.
by Fishcrazy on Sep 3, 2009 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, he's walk-prone.
He’s also allowed only 43 hits in 51 innings, of which only 3 were home runs. He walks a lot of guys, but he strikes out a lot of guys, and doesn’t allow the kind of hard hits that drive men in.
I don’t have any data on inherited runners. I do know that opponents’ OPS against him is .700. (This is pretty much exactly in line with his last three seasons.) By contrast:
Calero .512
Sanches .594
Donnelly .631
Meyer .658
Nunez .699
Badenhop .719
Lindstrom .763
Now, relievers and starters can’t really be compared, but Josh Johnson has a .614 OPS allowed. Nolasco has a .760. (By comparison, Hayden Penn allowed a .912, and the much-maligned Luis Ayala an .889 — 1.058 with the Marlins.)
I guess my point is, Pinto isn’t a great reliever, but he’s definitely a very solid one — roughly equivalent to Nunez. Sometimes he’ll allow a run or two, but he’s usually effective, and because his main problem is walks, it’s extremely rare that he’ll get into any kind of big trouble. We don’t want to burn out our top guys in a five-run game, and Pinto is a solid second-tier option, along the same lines as Meyer or… well, Nunez, but that’s another argument.
(I’d actually rather have him in there than Meyer in a situation where we’re up by 5 — Meyer is probably a little better this year, but he’s more likely to give up extra-base hits, and his pre-2009 performance inspires much less confidence than Pinto’s.)
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

Did Spud pick Cox: tossed, again:
I hope so.
by craig on Sep 3, 2009 10:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
sadly, no. but he could make that pick tomorrow and still have like a 50% change of getting it.
i fail to see why it’s so glorious that a manager misses 20 or 30 innings a year because of ejections, but i guess i’m not a baseball pundit.
by Fishcrazy on Sep 3, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Is the reasoning that he stalls the game and rattles the opposing pitcher?
Because I can kind of see that.
But only kind of.
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.
by 3.3seconds on Sep 3, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
who knows.
it’s certainly no motivational tactic, as ejections usually are. I just don’t get why no one ever mentions that you might want to have your manager around for the full game. It’s like, “Oh, ha ha, that Bobby Cox, ejected again!” It’s gotten into clownery already.

Now, Lindstrom...
HERE is a guy who has lost us games before. (But he won’t tonight. I hope.)

I still don't trust Maybin.
I mean, if he’s improved, great. But he was just too awful in April for me to believe he’s entirely ready now. Hope he proves me wrong, though…
