Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla discuss things - Loudly
Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla got into a shouting match before today's game, prompting the team to close the clubhouse to reporters.
As reported by Juan C. Rodriguez:
Hanley Ramirez is at odds with double play partner Dan Uggla and other teammates over Ramirez's percieved lack of desire and commitment to winning.Uggla also accused Ramirez of not caring because he's already secured a $70 million contract. Ramirez and Uggla openly argued in the clubhouse about why Ramirez really exited Tuesday's rain delayed game in the fourth inning. Ramirez complained about teammates showing him up when he came out because of cramping in his left hamstring.
---
Ramirez has no doubt some teammates feel like he faked the injury to preserve his National League-leading batting average, a claim he feels is insulting.
Now, that's team chemistry.
This will go one of two ways: 1) Put a fork in them, they're done. or 2) Teams have, after clearing the air, become closer and rally around each other.
If I were guessing, option 1) is probably the most likely outcome.
[Update] JCR writes in more detail: Marlins Ramirez, Uggla trade verbal barbs in clubhouse

I’ve been posting about this for days. In the last 16 games, Hanley has driven in FOUR RUNS, three of those in one game on Aug 21st. Meaning in the other 15 games, he has ONE RBI! Hanley is obviously tanking it, and everybody who watches them every day has noticed it. His body language, EVERYTHING tells the story. This is crunch time, team fighting for a playoff spot and your big hitter goes AWOL. ONE RBI in 15 games? Oh but he did get some hits about a week ago: slap hits to RF as he chases the batting crown. He is not a happy camper; expect him to demand a trade. I think he finally realizes that he will be playing in front of empty seats for the next two years and the ownership will not spend a dime, even if the team is in playoff range. Uggla was 1005 correct; Hanley has QUIT!

That was supposed to read Uggla was 100% correct; Hanley has QUIT!

uh, players do slump, you know.
Pujols went through a pretty bad slump in July. Guess he quit, too.

Or, you know, maybe he's injured.
If his hamstring’s been bothering him — well, that IS the kind of thing that will affect a man’s play. Especially his ability to hit for power.
In general, there’s too much talk about players “quitting” or “choking,” as though getting hits was a matter of choosing to get hits. Do you think Hanley is as good as he is through sheer force of will, and if he got distracted by something, he’d suddenly become a singles hitter? Does Hanley hit because he’s happy? No. Hanley hits because he’s a baseball player, and a good one at that. Throughout the long span of a season, he’s going to be in all kinds of moods, and he’s going to keep hitting, because hitting is what he does.
And then sometimes, he’s not going to hit — because he’s hurt, because he’s facing the wrong pitchers, or because he just has some bad luck. Don’t assume that, just because a guy happens to slump in September, that has some kind of mystical significance. Assuming a slump’s going to happen, there’s a one in six chance of it happening in September. No more, no less.
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

It’s time for Hanley to address the team. Actually the time has past so I hope the meeting has already occurred. The Marlins need Hanley equally as much for his leadership as for his baseball talent.
I hope he grows up and becomes the leader he can be. His talent will increase with experience, hopefully his attitude does also.

LOL
Mr. .240 has something to say to the batting champ? Uggla has been phoning it in all YEAR, forget about the last few games. He’s lucky he’s not in the minors with that type of BA (although a few months down there to work on his swing might do him good). Look, Uggla is just another ill-mannered hick along the lines of Jeff Kent – he’s squealing not because he cares about winning- if he did, he’d try hitting above .250 for God’s sake. Its because he’s not getting signed and Ramirez is- simple as that. Uggla exhibits typical behavior of someone of his background- attacking teammates motivations without reason, yet behaving irresponsibly (found getting drunk at a bar at 1 am, when the Marlins had a day game the next day- big surprise, hickboy goes 0-4 with an error). himself. Clubhouse cancer. Ship Uggla to someone else to deal with his little attitude and his pathetic batting average.
