Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Can the Marlins make there famous wildcard run?

I claimed the Marlins needed more pitching; they didn’t do a bad thing by picking up Nick Johnson. But getting swept by the Washington Nationals is just unbelievable. In the first game of the series the Marlins blew a 4 run lead when the Nationals scored 6 runs in the 8th. In the second game the Marlins couldn’t get the bats working to tie the game up. And the third game the marlins were tied in the 8th and let the game go with a 4 run 8th.

In 3 games the Fish blew 2 games with huge innings from the opposing team. That’s the Marlins bullpen if we want to make a playoff run they got to have a reliable bullpen. Kiko Calero can’t be an every night guy. Brian Sanchez is to new to call him reliable; Pinto is a poker game you never know how he’s going to throw. Leo Nunez is great for a young guy but in 48 innings with 21 earned runs and 39 hits, it unacceptable for a one inning reliever.

With Nunez every time there are runners on base the other team drives them in. He struck out 45 and walked 20 that is very good. But 21 earned runs in 39 hits is not good, he’s a reliever/closer. Nunez is getting outs but 15% of the time when Nunez is on the mound runs are scored on him. Leo pitches one inning a game either the 8th or 9th, 15 % looks good but it’s not good he needs to come in and shut it down for one inning that’s his role.

If Nunez drops that 15% to 10 % it makes a huge difference he eliminates one third of the runs scored on him, it gives the Marlins a few more games and that’s crucial in the wild card race. The role that’s he plays for the Fish he’s needs to pitch with less mistakes for that 1 inning he steps on the mound. If he can’t do that by the end of the month I say send him down to the minors.

The Marlins are in the race for a playoff spot they need to manage like they want to be at the front of the race. This part of the year has no room for lots of error, before the break is when you take the chances to find the strengths of your team not the second half. I like Nunez and think he going to be great but the Marlins are a major league team and need to run it like one especially in the second half. For example Nick Johnson was brought in to hit not steal, Cantu or Johnson need to be put in the outfield and either Helms or Coghlan need to be put at 3rd. I’d like to see Cantu go to 1st, Johnson go to right field, and Helms go to 3rd. My point was made (Manage like a major league club).

What? Are you actually saying that the team needs Wes Helms and his 3 career stolen bases to start so that we can run more, while Nick Johnson’s ruined knees man the outfield? Even if Helms had Bonifacio’s speed, you’d be talking about stealing like ten extra bags from here out, while giving up an extra hit or two every game with Johnson in right. Those extra steals would basically all have to be steals of home with 2 outs and Bonifacio at bat for that to make even the slightest bit of sense (plus that whole “Helms becomes a runner overnight” thing)

PS: Nunez has given up runs in far more than 15% of his appearances this year.

no

im say we need wes helms to play 3rd instead of cantu making errors cause helms is a natural 3rd basement and i looked at it like this nunez has pitched 48 innings that 144 outs, well out of that 144 outs nunez has gave up 21 earned runs and thats 15% and thats not good.

YES WE CAN, JUST FIRE USELESS FREDDY

HE HAS TO GO, we have to play small ball and we dont. We dont bunt anyone over, dont even know how to. One of the worst team in creating run support and this is the MANAGERS fault. We have several players that should be getting a least one drag bunt-single everygame, we need a stronger bench (our cheap owner took care of that) and Nick Johnson has a piss poor arm – cannt even throw out a slow runner from short right field. Terrible pick up, trade him for a starter, bring up some AAA players and get rid of Pinto and Ayala. BUT YOU MUST START BY FIRING USELESS FREDDY. His stupidity this year alone has cost the team more than 10 games. Way to many but knowing Little Hitler, he does not have the balls to fire him. So here we are stuck again, hoping and wishing and hoping for another year. The fan support is there, just to bad the owner is so CHEAP. Hell is the Twins can trade for Pavano, WHY CANNT WE TRADE FOR ANOTHER STARTER??? COME LORIA, SELL A DAMM PAINTING AND MAKE IT WORK…. You will loose fan support next year and you WILL NOT SELL OUT for the new ballpark until YOU MAKE THESE CHANGES…………..

A stronger bench?

We carry two very good pinch hitters, both of whom are opposite-handed (Gload is lefty, Helms is righty), and our bench isn’t very strong? And since when do AAA players help you go on a playoff run? Usually, teams call up more AAA players when they are completely out of the race…

I’m not a big fan of Fredi, but your reasoning in calling for his job is ridiculous.

I think what Nick Johnson can do from right field would be more relevant if he wasn't a first baseman.

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.
