Marlins callups should be familiar names
In case you didn't know, and I bet you did, when September 1 rolls around the roster expands from the 25-man to the 40-man and most of the names you have heard before.
...prior to the opener of a three-game series against the Mets at Land Shark Stadium, manager Fredi Gonzalez said he only wants to bring up players he feels are going to immediately help his team get over the hump and into the playoffs.
---
Position players who will likely be back this season are catcher Brett Hayes -- Gonzalez said he's always looking for a third backstop -- and outfielders Brett Carroll, Maybin and Alejandro De Aza, one of which may be the corresponding move if first baseman Nick Johnson is put on the disabled list after Tuesday night's game.
In terms of pitchers, that list could include Burke Badenhop (on the disabled list), Andrew Miller, Luis Ayala, Rick VandenHurk and Tim Wood, among others.
Normally I brush aside the roster expansion but not this year, we need the help.

Heck... I'll take a guy who can eat innings.
Sometimes it doesn’t matter — we’re up by 8? Down by 8? I’ll put a pitching machine in there to save us from having to play our real relievers, many of whom have been overworked all season. If things go too wrong, just yank the guy.
Now, as far as innings eaters go, I’d rather see any of the guys they mentioned before Ayala. But one more guy at the end of the bench hurts no one.
He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.
apparently nowhere.
He hasn’t pitched in the majors since he was with us in 2007. I could’ve sworn he was in Pittsburgh at some point last year, but i guess not.
