To Wagner, or not to Wagner?

That is the question.

As of 12 noon tomorrow Billy Wagner will clear the waiver wire.  He is expected to do so because of the amount of money left on his contract and the buy out after this year.  He will then most likely pitch in the Mets game at night to showcase his abilities.

Several scouts that have seen him rehab have said that he could surely help a team making a playoff push.

I think, if the Fish can get him at a cheap enough price, we should do it.  I think a late innings rotation of Kiko, Sanches, Nunez, and Wagner is absolutely sick, leaving pinto (ugh) and Meyer as lefty specialists.  The Hopper of course would be the long reliever we have come to know and love.

Thoughts?

Definately

As long as the price isn’t too high, we should take the shot on him.

Problem is, the price may be too high

The Mets will either ask for a decent prospect and pay Wagner’s $2.5M remaining, or more or less hand him off to you at the current price. Either way, it’s not very palatable. I don’t think 15 innings of Wagner is worth Ryan Tucker, is it?

Prorated already

That’s what we’d owe if they made us pay for him. He’s owed $10.5M this season in total. Ugh, what teams will give to closers…

Yeah... he's good, but not better than (say) Kiko or Sanches.

Our bullpen is not the problem at this point. We have five guys with ERAs under three. (Six counting Tim Wood.) Who has that? Nobody has that.

Take those five guys, add a mop-up guy (presumably Badenhop), plus Nunez, and we’re set. I’d say they shouldn’t have one set “closer” — play the relievers based on the situation — but no team’s going to do that today.

He's currently two-thirds man, one-third amazing. Which, let's face it, is still a pretty good ratio.

The problem, in my opinion

is that our starters IP is dropping drastically every outting almost, so we need a deep pen so nobody gets more over worked.

ANyway, Wagner has been claimed and JCR says its “inconceivable” that the marlins risked that move.. Maybe the mets will DFA santana and we can win that?

I think what we need is outfielders, mostly.

Maybe one more starter. Mostly outfielders though. Probably have to wait for the offseason on that, though.

How much longer do we have Johnson guaranteed?

I meant Josh Johnson, not Nick.

The existence of Nick Johnson is really throwing me off here.

I believe 3 more years...

… was trying to come up with that off the top of our heads at the D-Backs AAA team game last night with a Cubs fan, and that’s what we had estimated based off of two years of big league play.

2 more

This was his first of three arbitration seasons. My guess (and it’s a complete guess because god knows what this FO thinks at any given time) is that he gets an extension this off-season, not because of how good he’s been but because he’d be a free agent in the offseason immediately prior to the new stadium. I know I said the same thing about Hanley vis-a-vis the potential All-Star Game hosting, but even moreso here, you can’t imagine the beating the organization would take if the Opening Day starter in the new “no more excuses” era wasn’t Josh Johnson.
