Marlins need to make a move before the trade deadline
With the trade deadline coming up the marlins need to get some bullpen pitching someone to hold and possibly close games. The Marlins need to pick up someone to help Leo Nunez out. He’s a good young pitcher but he’s prone to make mistakes out there. With Matt Lindstorm coming back next month he might or might not come back on tempo, but ether way the Fish need to go get an arm for these situations.
There is a lot of talent on the team, half way through the season we are currently standing second in the NL East. It looks like the cylinders are starting to warm up with Hanley doing what he does, Cantu and Uggla driving in runs, also Ross has been stepping up when other players haven’t been and Hermida isn’t doing bad at all, batting 250. and 38 rubies. I feel Hermida could be amazing though he’s a guy that the Fish should stick with for awhile. It seems with the Marlins either one thing is working and the other things aren’t, the division is elite it is probably the hardest in baseball with all the talent from all the pitching to all the position players. If the Marlins want to stick around in the race for the division or the wild card they need all cylinders clicking and that mean pitchers performing and the lineup hitting.
I believe the Marlins can make the playoff not only because I’m a fan but they have a team that is capable of doing something. Another problem is stranded baserunners, for instincts; Bonifacio needs to steal more when he gets on. With his speed the guy should definitely have more then 18 bags. It’s like the Marlins don’t like taking chances Freddy Gonzalez need to trust Bonifacio’s wheels more often. But that is not the only problem with Bonifacio it seems every time he gets on it’s a infield single. He needs to keep that back foot planted and hit with his hips, instead of taking off before he even makes contact. He can really make the game exciting but I believe that he can be a .290 to a .300 hitter with that speed. If he puts that ball in the gap he can get extra extra bases turn a single into a double and a double into a triple. Bonifacio is just pure speed.
Let me get back to this bullpen starting with Renyel Pinto his stats look good but for someone who relieves the guys has pitched 33 innings and he has 25 walks. Ill give it to him because he has 32 strikeouts but you never know if he will throw balls or strikes. He seems to work the count instead of just throwing strikes to get outs so we can get the game over with. All and all the Marlins bullpen is pitching great but we need another guy to get in there that is a solid fit for a hold. It just makes that much of a difference. Like Kiko Calero, he gets the job done about every time with a 1.72 era in 37 innings pitching, that’s a solid guy we picked up. If we can get another guy to be a solid reliever that would be big.
I’d also like to see the Fish try and get Zach Duke from the Pirates. He’s a young pitcher with lots of potential and could use a team that could hit the ball and help him out a little bit. Plus the Pirates are trying to rebuild and the Fish have young guys they could trade for Duke. Duke would make the rotation unbelievable and the Fish need another reliable arm with Anibal Sanchez hurt and Andrew Miller in the minors. Another pick up the Fish are just turning there heads to is Juan Pierre. The Dodgers got him on the bench half the time and he’s on base a third of the time. We have Ross and Hermida and if we added Pierre, man that’s speed, average, and more coverage to the outfield. Also possibly a mentor to the Marlins young prospect Cameron Maybin. Who I believe is a star in the making, he’s just nervous at the big stage and just needs to get the jitters out and calm down. I see a 20 to 30 homerun guy out of that long stride; kind of see a young Griffey to be honest.
To conclude this, the Fish could take a big step right now by picking up an arm or two to help them make a playoff run because there going to need something in the division they play in. I truly believe we can win it all if the Fish get hot because Hanley is superman for the Fish. Right now he’s aiming for the batting title and he doesn’t look like he cooling down. The Marlin's fans know that the Fish can hit but they need to start hitting through the lineup and show that the Marlins are contenders too. No one ever gives them a chance just look at the 1997 and 2003 teams. Two of the biggest upsets in baseball history, the Fish never had a shot. As a wild card team both times they did the unthinkable, just look how young this team is and the ups and downs they had this season and there still in it. The door is open for them they just need to walk through it and be the contender that there capable of being.

One: The Fish already signed TWO new relievers in the past three weeks, so why in the world would they trade for more? Ayala may be useless, but Donnelly has been pretty solid so far, and I have no complaints about Badenhop, Calero, Sanches, Nunez, and Meyer. Pinto and Lindstrom are the only two I’d like to see less of.
Two: Juan Pierre is not worth what you’d have to give up to get him. The only good outfielder who I think you could get for a reasonable price is Luke Scott, because the Orioles have too many young ones as it is. But even then, what do we have that’s so interesting to other teams and are willing to give up?

you can never have too many good relievers...
I would love to see the Marlins use Pinto and Lindstrom alot less and pick up a better reliever for Hermida or Uggla. I’m also hoping that they dont give Lindstrom the closer job once he comes back, and we have a good solid closer by then.
But getting rid of offense
Doesn’t solve the Fish’s biggest issue, which is OBP, where we are 11th in the NL. By contrast, the team ERA (even with the large number of huge blowups in starts like John Koronka and BGA) is at 4.22, which is 7th best in NL. A big part of that is our very solid bullpen.
Dan Meyer
38.0 IP, 26 H, 9 ER, 4 HR, 12 BB, 34 K, 1.00 WHIP, and a 2.13 ERA
Kiko Calero
36.2 IP, 21 H, 7 ER, 0 HR, 18 BB, 45 SO, 1.06 WHIP, and a 1.72 ERA
Brian Sanches
25.0 IP, 22 H, 3 ER, 1 HR, 9 BB, 23 SO, 1.24 WHIP, and a 1.08 ERA
Burke Badenhop
52.0 IP, 53 H, 20 ER, 4 HR, 16 BB, 36 SO, 1.33 WHIP, and a 3.46 ERA
Leo Nunez
45.0 IP, 37 H, 20 ER, 7 HR, 18 BB, 43 SO, 1.22 WHIP, and a 4.00 ERA
Renyel Pinto (who tends to blow up in the clutch)
35.2 IP, 27 H, 12 ER, 2 HR, 25 BB (uggh), 34 SO, 1.46 WHIP, and a 3.03 ERA
So basically, we have four middle relievers with over 30 strikeouts each, and a long reliever who has arguably outperformed two starting pitchers over the course of the season (BGA and West). I wouldn’t mind seeing us acquire a nice, fresh arm, but why not just bring up Tim Wood again from AAA, since he was doing pretty well in his short time in the majors?

thats true...
we do have some relievers with potential in the minors, but in my opinion we still need at least one more proven good veteran reliever (not somebody like Luis Ayala) and one more bat (nobody comes to mind right now)
you don't trade a 30 HR, two-time All-Star 2B for a reliever.
Uggla’s season is frustrating. We know he has looming contract issues. And if it were part of a larger package deal that upgraded us significantly at other positions, that’s one thing. But trading one of your best hitters for bullpen help is lunacy.
As for Hermida, there was a rumor of him being traded to Pittsburgh for Matt Capps. I’m not sure the bullpen is as pressing a need as it was a month or so ago when this rumor popped up, but trading him for just about anything would be fine with me.
No kidding
Brett Carroll is a far better defender, and with the space opened up, Maybin could be recalled in order to play center and let Ross take right over again. And we wouldn’t have to watch him casually walk back to first just to find out he’d been thrown out for being a dumbass.

That play pissed me off last night
he got a hit, and just walked back to base thinking he is the shyt. But we won anyway, which makes that insident a little easier to swalllow.

my post was taken out of context...
i didnt mean a straight up trade for Uggla or Hermida.. I meant a package deal whos main player would be either Uggla or Hermida for another package deal who’s main player would be a strong reliever/closer. I think that trading 1 player for another single player is not the right way to go about any trade (unless its Bonifacio.. I’d trade him away for a 12-pack of Heineken right now to be honest), which is why I was getting nervous when I was hearing rumors of a Cantu for Jonathan Sanchez (SF) trade months ago.
Tim Marchman at SI.com makes the following suggestion:
Florida Marlins: Third baseman Emilio Bonifacio has been just miserable this year — both his on base and slugging averages are hovering around .300, the equivalent of the Mendoza line — and any live body for third would greatly improve their chances in the wild card race. Come to think of it, the Marlins have some spare outfielders, while the Rockies don’t have much use for Garrett Atkins …
Link here. Spare outfielders? Us? The team that has to start a converted 2B in left? But if he means Hermida, then sure, why not? Atkins is having a lousy season, but his last three seasons are the kind Hermida could only dream about.
"both his on base and slugging averages are hovering around .300, the equivalent of the Mendoza line"
So let’s trade for a guy with the same numbers despite playing at Coors? Um…
And once again (in the general sense), why exactly would Colorado want outfielders? Hawpe and Fowler are locks, a fairly productive platoon in left, and Carlos Gonzalez for the future. That’s five guys they’re not exactly dying to be rid of, much less for someone like Hermida.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
I dunno, you'd have to ask Marchman why Colorado would want an outfielder.
I’m just having fun with what he wrote.
Besides, there’s no comparison between Atkins and Boner. As I said, Atkins is having a lousy season and he’s still probably worth more than Boner. Atkins at his worst is superior to Boner at his best. And I’d gladly take the chance that Atkins bounces back next year. It’s no different than urging people to chill out with Uggla; one bad season shouldn’t erase several years of stardom.
Of course, this is all hypothetical, as is 99% of all trade speculation.
this is why I said pierre and dukes
Zach Dukes is not an outrages amount of money and he seriously a good pitcher and Juan Pierre is a guy with average, he lives in south florida and plus who beside Hanley is hitting over .300 on the club. Luke Scott is good but pierre puts more scoring oppertunity into a team which has 5 guys who have 15 or more doubles. pierre is worth a hole lot. But im want the fish to push for Zack Dukes big time.
Duke’s already been talked about. Pierre is what he is, and what he is is not good. He’s been helped out by a hot streak and since has played right around where he’s been the last few years, which is bench-worthy at best.
Speed and BA are not OBP. Very few players can turn speed+average into OBP well, like Ichiro. Juan Pierre is not Ichiro, and really that’s what he’d have to be to be worth his $9M plus whatever we’d have to deal for him.
Told ya guys, right around trade deadline time, everyone thinks the sky is falling and a move need be made. Guys, I’d suggest we hole up until this storm of trade offerings has come down after the end of July.
I don't know about Duke specifically, but another starter is looking like a better idea,
given Miller’s injury, ineffectiveness and possible trade to San Diego. If Anibal comes back healthy and performs well, that’s a bonus, but I’m not really expecting much from him at this point.

who do you have in mind fron San Diego?
