Keeping with the Trend: Who would you add?

Basically copying my reply to another post:

I don't think we come back and win the division.

With the Phils and Dodgers battling it out for best NL record, the Marlins would be bound to play LA for the first round of the playoffs since inter-divisional games are a no-no in that set.  If the Marlins got destroyed in 2 games, or 3, there's no way we are buyers.  We showed we could beat the most likely first round opponent though, with what we have, so now we are buyers or standing pat.  I think the decision ends up being based on asking prices of relievers and possibly a bat.

So now developing that further....

We all read who people would trade... Some Uggla, all Boni, a lot of Hermida.  Maybe Miller and some of the higher up prospects, though Stanton and Morrison have been called untouchable.

We'd all like a closer, and a replacement for Boni.  Maybe an OF, maybe a SP.

Let's be realistic though.  Name some players you'd like to add, and try to keep it to people that are being shopped...

I for one, would have liked to see DeRosa, but since he's off the market, I will go with:

Freddy Sanchez

Justin Duscherer

George Sherrill

Nobody who's an MLBer

There’s no point in trading for this season, and all our holes except SP depth have definite replacements waiting in the minors. If they could get an intriguing pitching prospect for an Uggla/Hermida package then great, but who’s going to be looking for those guys for a playoff push? The only team that remotely fits would be the Cubs, and their minor league arms aren’t exactly wow. Since you’d basically be picking from guys with already injury-riddled careers and/or guys whose reports vary widely, it’d be hard to find a deal that doesn’t look like a straight salary dump, which I honestly think the FO will be more and more concerned about with the stadium deal done.

That’s the whole thing: you can’t just say “let’s get rid of these guys.” Somebody has to want them, and in-season deals are almost always made by teams looking to make a run now. This year, those teams simply don’t match up with ours, at least superficially. There’s always the possibility of a multi-team deal, but there’s really no point for us to armchair one.

If I’m in the FO, my main concern this year is protecting the health of the rotation as innings mount, and continuing development at the lower levels. And finding a way to “Home Alone” Bonerface on one of the road trips.

Let's do nothing

Because that has got us in the playoffs as of now, right?
I sure hope the FO has a better attitude than that. If you want to make something happen, you do it. You do whatever it takes. You definitely don’t pout and say nobody wants our players so let’s just give up. Please God let someone with at least half of one ball run our FO, because if someone like Dan runs things, I’m becoming a Rays fan. I’m sorry, well… no.

you've got to know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em

We’re talking about a team that allows more runs than they score, is 8 games back in the loss column of a team that is decidedly stronger (despite two superstars who will surely regress towards the mean after lackluster first halves), tied with a team with possibly the best rotation in the league, and behind four other teams in the Wild Card, all of whom have positive run differentials.

The only thing that we can “make happen” this year is to throw away next year. That’s not pessimism; it’s realism. Wanting to go for it with this team in this situation isn’t being optimistic; it’s being reckless.

surely you can do that yourself

I mean, we’re the same person just using different accounts after all.

Yeah, let's give up.

We could be one or two players away from making the playoffs. But fuck it. We could improve our defense a little and maybe win some more games. Nah, we can’t do it. We could get a seasoned SP to solidify our rotation. That would key come playoff time also.

What’s that? Playoffs? Don’t talk about playoffs. You kidding me. Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game.
