Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: All-Star Game (7/14)
The starting pitcher for the NL is Tim Lincecum. The starting pitcher for the AL is Roy Halladay.
The festivities begin at 8:00 p.m. The game should start around 8:20 p.m.
Ichthyomancy is slightly different in that you won't be making an attendance pick. What you will be deciding, if you choose to play, is whether the AL or NL will be victorious, the MVP of the game but take heart there will be two other players deemed point worthy other than the actual MVP. And also, the standard AAB pick is in play.
Since I have no idea what the participation rate will be tonight, your name will be added along with your picks when they are made. Or maybe to more precise, when I get home from work or sometime there after. Once again you do not have to select a Marlin, you can if want, though it is not required. The points do count towards Ichthyomancy.
Here is the Ichthyomancy pick table:
| FishStriper | League | Player | AAB |
| Bumppo | NL | Utley | NL relievers: 0 R |
| Fishcrazy | NL | Pujols | Jeter: 1+ H; Lincecum: 0 R |

| LadyFish | AL | Young | Game E > 3 |
| Hurricane | AL | Pujols | NL HR > AL HR |

and for the record,
I like that the All-Star Game decides homefield in the World Series. Homefield isn’t life-or-death in the playoffs the way it might be in football or basketball, so it’s not like the stakes are that high. And it’s certainly better than just rotating homefield every year, as was done previously.
The talking heads can insist all they want that the All-Star Game would be just as special if it were still an exhibition, but it’s not true. The ghosts of Carl Hubbell and Pete Rose can only sustain the game so long. Putting homefield on the line adds a level of seriousness not found in any other sport, where all-star games are half-assed and meaningless.
Can I get in on this tonight?
2009 Florida Marlins: Year of the Young Guns
#1 Marlin fan from Illinois!
giving Bonerface his due... kind of.
http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2009/7/14/949376/dont-forget-the-baserunning
Sky breaks down BPro’s baserunning metric (or the cool part of it, anyway: taking extra bases [ie. first-to-third on a single; score from first on a double; etc] rather than SB/CS) and determines that a) the Fish are 2nd in the MLB in runs added via baserunning and b) Bonifacio is tied for 5th with +3 runs.
Even more interesting though, if you check out his spreadsheet, you can see the category breakdown and note that when you include SB/CS, Bonifacio drops to +1 (which of course implies he’s -2 runs just on SB/CS), and your new Marlins leader is… Chris Coghlan? Yep, for while Mr. Coghlan hasn’t quite added a full run in any category, he’s positive across the board.
And to hammer home the point that the Fish are great at baserunning as long as you don’t include SB/CS, you can see that Coghlan is in fact tops on the team in SB/CS runs with a whopping +0.234. Our “best” player in terms of run advancement on stolen bases has contributed less than a quarter of a run. Bonifacio, by contrast, is the worst on the team with -2.231. His basestealing (or lack thereof) has cost the team more than two runs.
Of course, two runs really isn’t much, and in fact, the larger point when you look at the league-wide numbers is just how insignificant baserunning is in the grand scheme of things. But for a team that needs all the help it can get, it is a bit nice to know we are one of only two teams to add a full win via non-SB running.

other notes of interest
Volstad is the best running pitcher thus far, at +0.65, better than Cantu, Helms, Baker, Paulino and Hermida. That list goes in descending order, which tips you off to Hermida’s unfortunate double: worst non-SB/CS baserunning on the team, and by far (over 2 runs!) the worst total baserunning.
In fact, when you factor in the comparison of Hermida at -3.25 total and BC at +1.07, with their defensive numbers, you could make a strong argument that if Fredi insists on not batting Hermida in front of Hanley, the team is probably better off with Carroll. In fact, that’s an argument not just for BC, but yet another indictment of the Bonifacio infatuation, as it now has gotten so bad that it somehow makes benching the team’s 2nd best OBP a necessary move. The fact that it’s even possible to make that statement makes me wonder if Bonifacio is more than just a terrible player, but rather is a living, breathing act of baseball terrorism.

"he's been the I-beam of the rotation"
huh? now there’s great baseball analysis that even the kids will understand.
Well, even if Hanley isn't doing it with his bat
He’s bringing some respectability back to the Florida defense
wooo Grandy
that’s the way to back up my MVP vote. Love that man.

“You can make an argument that Kevin Youklis is the most valuable player in the league… I know that’s a little extreme.”
Does this guy even hear himself? Wow.

twice in a row now
Joe Buck has said “there’s the tying run” when the guy gets to third. It kind of made sense with Granderson, since there was only one out, but this time, with two down and strikeout artist Ryan Howard up, it’s far from a tie.

for those who may not be watching
it’s not so much the phrase “there’s the tying run” but the way he says it, as if it has just happened.

lots of shots of Hanley doing...
…uh, nothing really. Thanks FOX!

PR
now everybody can write about how this is a new era when the biggest play of the ASG is a defensive play by a stolen base guy and not a homer by a guy on steroids. You know that’s at least part of the choice.

I have no doubt you're right and ....
it’s going to end up being: who are going to believe MLB or your lying eyes?
