Is Gaby About To Be The New 3B?
Usually when I've updated the Organizational Depth Chart, it's just a bunch of meaningless moves around the affiliates (well meaningless to us, at least; I'm sure those guys are very interested). But seeing the names go up and down, apparently I've also learned who a few of the lower guys are. It was that subconscious memory that made me stop a bit when I saw the following:
06/19/2009 Assigned New Orleans Zephyrs Matt Craig 3B Matt Craig assigned to New Orleans Zephyrs from GCL Marlins.
This move could very well be the final step in Gaby Sanchez getting his call-up, replacing Bonifacio at third.
A week ago, JCR reported that Gaby was being played exclusively at third for New Orleans, and speculated that meant he was being prepped to take over the hot corner. That's all well and good, but what does it have to do with Matt Craig? Well I'll tell you if you stop being so pushy.
Anyway, I recognized Craig's name as a former starter, which would require updating the ODC lineup. I had only recently decided to reflect the change of Gaby being the starter at 3B, so I wasn't sure what to do with Craig, who had previously been the starter there. That's when I checked the logs. Craig was sent to the Gulf Coast League on June 6. Gaby was sent to New Orleans on... say it with me now... June 6. It could be a coincidence, that Craig needed some rehabbing at the same exact time Gaby was sent down. Or it could be that Craig was sent down because Gaby was taking his spot - which he ended up doing.
And so it could now be a coincidence, that Craig is back at the same time Gaby had gotten used to 3B and Bonifacio was terrible (oh wait, that's all the time). Or it could be that Craig is back to regain his spot, which is about to be vacated because Gaby is about to get the call.
We shall see. But if it happens, I want an Ichthy point.

Good find Dan. Yea, if Craig was a former starter at that level and now is being brought back up to New Orleans, it’s likely that Sanchez will be coming at any time to take over Bonifacio’s place.
I think an important question is whether Bonifacio will be sent down to the minors or if the Marlins will keep him as a utility infielder. If they keep him I can’t think of anyone to send down; my first guess would have been De Aza.
wow, definitely a good find...
I can’t wait to hear Bonifacio’s name getting sent down. So overdue.

I don't know about Boni getting sent down;
maybe benched first. Given Fredi’s and Beinfest’s speed fetish, I don’t know if they’d actually be able to send him down. It probably wouldn’t be immediate, anyway. Look at how they gradually phased Coghlan in over a span of 2 or 3 weeks.
Of course, even if they do find a roster spot for him, Amezaga will be healthy at some point, and we all know who wins that battle of slap-hitters.
I can still hope, right?
As far as Amazing Amezaga goes, I never knew how much I would miss him. He would be great to have right about now with the lack of offense lately. He’s going to be back after the all star game right?

I think...
Honestly, I’m not really sure of his timetable anymore. They initially said he’d be out a few weeks, and now it’s dragged into a few months.
update-ish.
I was looking at the Zephyrs box tonight and noticed neither Gaby nor Matt Craig were playing, which seemed odd. So I checked the roster and… no Matt Craig. I didn’t see any Zephyrs transactions involving him, so I searched.
Apparently on Friday, he was traded to the Cubs. Which I should have noticed since he’s playing tonight against New Orleans. But anyway, I guess it didn’t go through as a New Orleans transaction because he was traded for “future considerations.”
I don’t know what that means re: Gaby, but it seems like it merited an update.
