outfielders and batting average

Jeremy Hermida is leading the outfielders with .269. Next is cody ross batting .254.  Unless you want to consider brett carrols .270 in like 35 at bats.  This is flat out sad.  I went to the game yesterday and i wonder why they play bonifacio at 3rd.  Me makes erros, cant hit, and doesn't even steal bases when he gets on.  I'd rather play matt domingez there.  This team cant compete in the major leagues.  Its minor league baseball at a major league price. Also i dont understand why fredi gonzalez puts in burke badenhop in last night.  He puts his best pitcher out of the pen in, who can go 3-4 innings in relief, in a mop up role in the 9th. ANDY FOX FOR MANAGER!!!!

hmmmm...

First of all, Hermida and Coghlan have the 2nd and 3rd highest OBPs on the team, respectively. For Coghlan especially, as the leadoff hitter, batting average is irrelevant.

Secondly, I’m not sure what this has to do with Fredi. Neither Hermida nor Coghlan had minor league averages that were especially high, and Cody has always been a low average guy. They weren’t hitting for average before playing for Fredi. Bonifacio has been terrible his whole career, including, obviously, before playing for Fredi. If anything, shouldn’t you have a problem with Beinfest?

And finally, despite the fact that Badenhop is not the best pitcher in the bullpen, the point is that’s his usage pattern. He hadn’t thrown in three days. What’s more, it’s precisely the fact that he does throw multiple innings that makes it fine for him to be out there in mop-up duty. He throws easy; he’s not the kind of guy who is going to throw all-out in a mop-up inning and potentially be unavailable the next day.

PS: It’s funny to call for Fox to be the manager in the same post decrying Bonifacio’s defense, since… you know… Andy is the infield coach.

alright mr. know it all.... take this

listen i understand u cant blame the manager for players performance, but fedi is awful… oh lets leave hayden penn in…. im glad he is gone too bad he dnt take fredi with him… And Fox Rocks and ppl actually like him. The only ppl that like fredi are the spanish guys that he gives free tickets to. People who actually go to games, (me) hear other people who go to games (not you) and you can hear that no one like fredi. The marlins do every thing the wrong way. And you are right, it is beinfest to blame, he shouldnt be putting this low level of talent on the field. the marlins get a ton of money in the revenue sharing. they only spend 30 mill, where is that money going? plus the money they make. they should have signed cabrera and hanley then make a bid for a stadium. I wouldnt have minded seeing this poorly run franchise leave town… They are only good for a year then they suck for about 7. great way to build a fan base and show the people you are dedicated to winning.

The Marlins have multiple issues

But one of the worst traits of our team is the bad infield defense, between the high error totals and the third-worst throw-out stealing percentage. So why would you want the man responsible for those (Fox) promoted?

hanley will never be a gold glover and bonifacio sucks. Andy fox knows baseball better then fredi. Its not his fault that he has a bunch of retards playing the infield

by Basebal420 on Jun 18, 2009 7:19 PM EDT reply actions

Hanley is a league average SS by all accounts, and that is good enough from a premium defensive position, especially with the bat he carries. Bonifacio is very, very bad at third base, Cantu is an average 1B, and Uggla is a second baseman who’s destined to move to a corner infield spot in the next year or two. But this can all hardly be blamed on the manager, or even the infield coach; it’s likely just who they are as players. And how can we tell Andy Fox knows baseball better than Fredi? I’m not a big Fredi fan, but stating batting averages for outfielders doesn’t give me any reason to fire him.

It’s just a little confusing, that’s all…

by SFiercex4 on Jun 19, 2009 12:30 AM EDT reply actions

I sure hope Uggla stays at 2nd for his sake...

If you thought the All Star game was bad, I can see him getting even more scared while playing at the hot corner. After the first line shot comes his way, he is gonna be playing on his heels more and more. Not to mention, his hands aren’t too quick. Picking balls and bare-handing balls is not his forte. Can someone tell Dan to stop attempting to bare-hand balls? I have never seen him accomplish it once.

You said corner spot though, so that infers you think its possible that midget could play first. That would be comical.

It’s obvious he can’t play second for much longer, he doesn’t have the range. Second base is considered more difficult than third, though it’s questionable and more likely that the positions require some different skill sets. A corner infield position seems like the logical conclusion. First base would be infinitely easier to play for Uggla, even with his height, but Cantu and later on Logan Morrison will be blocking the position. The only place left is third, which I think they should at least try Uggla at. I can’t tell (I’m not really a scout) if Uggla’s arm is inadequate for the hot corner, but if my guess is that with Uggla’s sure-handedness (he’s been OK in terms of errors), he should fare decently at the position provided he can throw across the diamond.

The barehanded plays you mentioned are just the type of thing that are also getting Uggla over at second, where he’s likely to see more balls. You can hide him a bit at third, where the range is less important and less balls are hit.

by SFiercex4 on Jun 22, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Less balls are hit to 3rd compared to 2nd?

I highly doubt that. With a majority righties in the league, I find it hard to believe you wouldn’t get tested a lot more at 3rd. I do think you could definitely hide his range. I just question his mental toughness. He has stepped up his sure-handedness a lot this year, because the error numbers are down. I definitely think 3rd is harder to play myself. I played both positions a lot growing up and you just get a lot more time to make a play on the ball at 2nd. Alternatively, you have a split second to react at 3rd. I just don’t see Uggla being very quick. I’d really rather Boni stay there for the rest of my life than see Uggs attempt 3rd.

You brought up another point too. His arm might not be good enough. I wouldn’t mind giving him a shot there if we collapse, but I’d rather not if we stay in contention.

Since you love Zone Rating so much:

Balls in Zone leaders 2008:
1. Cano (2B) 478
2. Lopez (2B) 448
3. Young (SS) 426
4. Cabrera, O (SS) 422
5. Pedroia (2B) 408

15. Rowand (CF) 363

30. Mora (3B)

2007
1. Hill (2B) 490
2. Tulowitzki (SS) 467
3. Rollins (SS) 447
4. Ellis (2B) 431
5. Peralta (SS) 427

9. Sizemore (CF) 402

27. Inge (3B) 368

Sure looks like third basemen field far fewer balls than second basemen. But then again, as a ballplayer surely you must be right, and the numbers wrong. My bad.

329 balls hit in Mora's zone, excuse me.

Boy, I’m not a ballplayer or a typist. What am I doing here?

Oh no... I am human.

I am just a horrible disgrace to mankind. I assumed wrong. Never knew how many more balls go to 2nd. Goes to show you how good the hitters are in the MLB. They know how to go the other way (kinda like you two). Either way, you still think Uggla can play first. That assumption is more ridiculous than anything I could ever come up with. Thanks guys for trying to always disagree with me. Appreciate you following my posts around too Dan (coughfagcough)…Fuckin douchebags.

I mean, you’ve already got the bonus point for “yeah, I was totally going to be a pro ball player but I got hurt.”
