Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

Ricky Nolasco Optioned

Ricky Nolasco after the game was optioned to New Orleans.

After the game, Nolasco (2-5) was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans. The Marlins’ opening-day starter, a 15-game winner last year, has an ERA of 9.07.

“We’ve got to get him fixed,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “That’s why we’re making the move down there—get him a couple of starts, and whatever it takes to get him straightened out.”

---

Gonzalez’s rotation has been a disappointment, and the Marlins will turn to a minor leaguer for help Saturday, when left-hander Sean West(notes) will be selected from Double-A Jacksonville to make major league debut.

The Marlins will also recall right-hander Chris Leroux from Jacksonville. Reliever David Davidson, who gave up five runs in the third inning, was designated for assignment.

A little bit in Nolasco's defense, he was pitching on three days rest for the first time in his career and he had to get four outs in both of the innings.

Whatever they are going to fix I hope it happens fairly quickly because right now the Marlins don't have a viable replacement for any of the starters.

Texas fan here

and I like Nolasco. I realize he has struggled big time this year. What are your roster deficiencies from a trade standpoint? I don’t watch many Marlins games, but it seems your infield is set minus third base. Baker has hit better than I thought, but how’s his defense? CS% looks poor at around 16-17% for him and I know there were Texas/Fla discussions about pitching for Max Ramirez in the offseason. I don’t know your outfield at all. What would it take for us to pry Nolasco away at a fair price (not fire sale lurking)?

I've actually been thinking about this too

at what point does the manager take the blame?

when he is to blame.

The starters are averaging 5.1 IP with a 5.9 RA. The lineup has an 84 OPS+. There is not a manager in the history of baseball who could turn those numbers into wins.

I haven’t seen anything to suggest Fredi is a great manager, but it’s a cop-out to think that just because he’s the most easily changed piece, he has to go.
