Hanley Ramirez fine, but hurting

Hanley Ramirez after being hit on the wrist is technically fine, but could be out of the lineup for a couple of days.

In the first inning, Ramirez was plunked on the right hand/wrist by a 94 mph John Maine fastball.

An X-ray came back negative, and Ramirez is listed as day-to-day with a sore right hand.

Ramirez said he will definitely not play on Tuesday.

Jrsyeagle reports in the comments that he won't play on Wednesday either.  Which is understandable since the Marlins will be facing Santana in a day game and Hanley hasn't been all that good at solving the left-hander in his career. (.133/.235/.133)  So why not give Amezaga a shot at trying to decipher that change up.  Alfredo has never had an AB against Johan in his career.  But he couldn't do much worse.

With Amezaga in the lineup and playing short, the defense of the Marlins actually improves.  Sure, it is not something you want to see over the long run, but it isn't a bad band-aid for a couple of games.

Really? Hanley’s not a GREAT defender, or even a very good one, but all the metrics I’ve seen suggest his range is average or slightly below-average. He’s no Derek Jeter, that’s for sure. I can’t imagine that he’s worse at SS than an out-of-position Amezaga.

Imagine it.

a) he’s not out of position. He came up a shortstop, and until he got to Florida, he played majority SS for every team he was with. Heck, he didn’t play an inning in the outfield until he got here. That’s out of position.

b) every year, Hanley has posted a negative UZR at short (often only slightly, but negative nonetheless); every year, Amezaga has posted a positive UZR at short (often only slightly, but positive nonetheless)

Fair enough… I didn’t know that about Amezaga. Makes me like him a bit more — I’m still unimpressed by him, but at least he can be unimpressive at multiple positions.
