Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Nationals (4/18)
Florida Marlins at Washington Nationals, Apr 18, 2009 1:05 PM EDT
The best record in major league baseball Marlins are back at it again against the Nats. Today is the first of the two remain games and both of them will be day games. (stupid day games)
You know the pitchers so you don't need me to tell you about them.
The Ichthyomacy results table is posted, so give a look. While I don't think I have made a mistake, it is always possible that I did. If my totals don't match yours, let me know.
Ichthyomancy is good to go.
Best of Luck to You!

TV blackout?
I don’t do the icky thing, but I’m picking the Marlins by a mile today. Scott Olsen will still be serving up cookies to his old teammates, JJ should be sharp, and the Nats WILL find new ways to hand over victory to their opponents. Just you watch.
Speaking of which, I have a gentlemen’s bet about whether this game will blacked out on DirecTV ch. 653 or not. Ideas? Guesses?
Thanks.
It's on The List
But I’m almost certain all the satellite providers show the “bonus” games, so I’d bet it’s shown. Perhaps not on that channel, but somewhere.

Nats hit better in 2009
I am developing a theory about good to great starting pitchers having trouble in the first inning, then settling down from then on.
Combine that with the fact that Nick Johnson, RZ, Dunn, and the absent Dukes are formidable hitters, I’m not worried for the Marlins.
Well, until that HR.
or else he misunderstood what Fredi meant
by “We’re not using Lindstrom and probably not Nuñez.”

Kearns making up for lost time
He will peter out, trust me. Kearns is biding his time until they 86 his a$$.
Nice one by Pauli!
And Ross is on after. 1 on, 1 out.

hey remember that first week

No
He just can’t hit high balls yet, and pitchers have figured it out.

That's alright.
JJ recovers, we keep beating Olsen like a red-headed stepchild, and we’ll be back in this game.

I hope Meyer is feeling good today...
cause I don’t think Johnson will make ti to the 5th (pitch count)
you know, technically...
…if we had traded Hanley for some middle relievers, a) that play would have been made and b) we’d be better able to go long on the bullpen.
hmmmm…

that sounds familiar...

I should have thought about Paulino's triple last time...
“Paulino finishes the Olsen Cycle” would have been a great AAB for today (he says, after the fact)

I wonder if we can petition...
…that since we played an extra inning yesterday, today’s first inning doesn’t count.
Yeah, that’s the ticket.

"Andrew Miller had a good one in Atlanta" (change up)
possibly, but if I remember Dan’s F/X chart correctly he was having trouble locating it.
well that depends
on whether or not he was trying to throw it everywhere. Because if he did, then he located it fantastically.

9 innings
Can they just deduct runs from the Nats for stinking up the place so we can call it a ballgame in 9 innings?

Hanley hurt?
Did you see Hanley wince as he dove for that ball early in the game? Hope he hasn’t aggravated an injury, or caused a new one.
Guess not

Who knew?
that Nats Park could host such exciting baseball?!
I gotta go to a game there when I visit home in a few weeks.
I know somebody has been saying it for a few games
but I may be ready to join the “Team of Destiny” believers.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
Reversion to the mean
There is no way the Marlins can maintain this torrid pace, but I swear to god I believe! And to think my stat-head buds had them picked to swim around the sewer with the Nationals. AS IF!
The big question now is: should I frame my Opening Day ticket? Or will that jinx them?
Are you sure?
I think we can keep it up and go 147-15. DESTINY.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
Well, I'm convinced
that the only games the Nationals will win the rest of the way will be by default. Something about opposing teams refusing to take the same field as a AAA club.
147-15?
That’s some pansy stuff right there.
161-1 or bust!
I'm doin the Fish again. (Yeah, yeah, yeah.)
My "extra innings" package provides no Sat. aft games
maybe it saved me from a heart attack today.
I can’t believe it – so far, this is almost too good to be true! Oh, well, let’s keep rolling, building as big a lead as possible. Go Marlins!
DirecTV 653
I watched them on DirecTV channel 653 as part of whatever regular package my housemate pays for. That’s about the only TV I watch any more.
and for Tommy:
35th team to start 10-1 or 11-0.
21st post-1900.
Of the 20 prior, 7 made the playoffs.
Of the 7, 4 made the World Series.
Of the 4, 3 won it.
The four World Series teams all started 10-1.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
A Fun Thought update
Those of you playing along with A Fun Thought can add 1 win to your projections.
So an 81-win team now wins 85.5, a 75-win team now wins 80, an 85-win team now wins 89, and so on and so forth.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
JJ's Pitch/FX
I don’t think anyone here would object to saying Johnson was pretty rough in the first and second before finally settling down. But just how rough was he?
You’re looking at every pitch he threw that was either outside the (rough approximation of a) strike-zone, or in the 1ft x 1ft center of the zone, split by innings 1&2 vs. 3 through 6. And as you can see, despite the former group being half as long, it accounts for the majority of dangerous pitches — especially those down the pipe.
So, yeah. A really, really rough first two innings.
