Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Nationals (4/18)

The best record in major league baseball Marlins are back at it again against the Nats.  Today is the first of the two remain games and both of them will be day games. (stupid day games)

You know the pitchers so you don't need me to tell you about them.

The Ichthyomacy results table is posted, so give a look.  While I don't think I have made a mistake, it is always possible that I did.  If my totals don't match yours, let me know.

Ichthyomancy is good to go.

Best of Luck to You!

TV blackout?

I don’t do the icky thing, but I’m picking the Marlins by a mile today. Scott Olsen will still be serving up cookies to his old teammates, JJ should be sharp, and the Nats WILL find new ways to hand over victory to their opponents. Just you watch.

Speaking of which, I have a gentlemen’s bet about whether this game will blacked out on DirecTV ch. 653 or not. Ideas? Guesses?

Thanks.

It's on The List

The Dreaded List

But I’m almost certain all the satellite providers show the “bonus” games, so I’d bet it’s shown. Perhaps not on that channel, but somewhere.

Nats hit better in 2009

I am developing a theory about good to great starting pitchers having trouble in the first inning, then settling down from then on.

Combine that with the fact that Nick Johnson, RZ, Dunn, and the absent Dukes are formidable hitters, I’m not worried for the Marlins.

Well, until that HR.

I’m afraid you’re right. Boney-face couldn’t hit nor wait for a walk, so he never got a chance to use his great speed with the Nats. His fielding is…less than stellar. It was fun while it lasted. I got to witness an inside-the-park HR on Opening Day. That was schweet.

JJ's Pitch/FX

I don’t think anyone here would object to saying Johnson was pretty rough in the first and second before finally settling down. But just how rough was he?

You’re looking at every pitch he threw that was either outside the (rough approximation of a) strike-zone, or in the 1ft x 1ft center of the zone, split by innings 1&2 vs. 3 through 6. And as you can see, despite the former group being half as long, it accounts for the majority of dangerous pitches — especially those down the pipe.

So, yeah. A really, really rough first two innings.
