Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Nationals (4/17)
Miami Marlins at Washington Nationals, Apr 17, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
The best record in baseball Marlins are in the nation's capital to take on the Nationals.
Since I'm seriously out of time here goes: Ricky will be fine and that may start tonight. Lannan hasn't shown anything he is near capable of doing. Hopefully that won't start tonight.
The road trip continues. Oh, enjoy the game tonight because the next two in the series are day games. Lucky for Architect, not so lucky for some of us.
Ichthyomancy be loving Friday but be running late.
Best of Luck to You!

This is just the opening series played again in Washington, isn't it?
21212
Bonifacio?
Lannan QS, but the marlins win anyway.
No-nifacio
We will finally get to see what a Maybin-Baker-Hanley top could look like. For probably 4 ABs each. Which is a good sample size, right Rich and/or Tommy?
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
You know, you can say Bonifacio’s start has been a fluke (though people acting like it’s a disaster because he just had “only” three hits in a three-game series… well…), or you can believe he’ll work out. You can say Maybin’s ready, or you can say he’s the modern-day equivalent of Gary Sheffield with the Brewers. But I think we can all agree on one thing: “getting more playing time for Wes Helms” is never a good reason for doing anything.
As always...
pulling for T-Rex to get his first win.

classic Maybin
poor route, but just enough speed to make up for it

this isn't what I thought they meant

Zimmerman's jersey
Maybe they changed the buttoning after that play a few years ago when he caught the ball in his shirt.

I dont know
I am about sick of Rick and Tommy. All they talk about is sweater vests, where they are sitting, there producer, the truck… I could go on.
I switched over to DVH
Call the came damn it!
up until now, there wasn't much good to say about the game
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
Didn't see it
But when DVH said Willingham was batting, I accidentally was like “Come on, Hammer” for a second.
I'm doin the Fish again. (Yeah, yeah, yeah.)
I love
coming home drunk at 2:30am and having some Marlins baseball to watch! At least for today I do. How we been doing? Nolo finding the strike zone any better today?
hmm, i guess not. at least its a 1 run game anyway

Hey Craig...
I made a slight typo in my AAB. Just switch “Nolasco” and “Glannon” for me. Clumsy fingers!
hmmm
Apparently there’s no such thing as the Hold A Lead “Hey Dan, We’re Having A Little Taco Night. Come On Over” Run.
Which is good, because that’s a terrible name.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
I just went on a beer run
Didn’t work.
Neither did sittin in the bar for a couple innings.
I'm doin the Fish again. (Yeah, yeah, yeah.)
come on Rally Everyone Coming Back To The Open Thread Run
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
he was really ineffective tonight.
he had a scott olsen game. i don’t know if it’s time to worry about Ricky yet or if he’s just a slow starter or something.
could be hurt
after 200 innings+ for first time
Catchy
Still think it sounds like an adjective used to describe a body on CSI
I'm doin the Fish again. (Yeah, yeah, yeah.)
by the way, i used to love doing that with baseball names...
the best one i came up with was cal ripken junior felix jose canseco.
...
well, I still love me some John Baker.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
no, if it was 2008,
Jacobs would’ve grounded into a double-play before the bases were ever full.
Progress.
Ha, true
Still, there were plenty of times in 2004 and 2005 where the Fish would get em loaded and squander away their chances to score
I'm doin the Fish again. (Yeah, yeah, yeah.)
but if it were 2008
I think we would have been given a run, because with Bonifacio on third, the Nats would have 10 men on the field. I don’t know the rule on that, if it even exists.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
just to come back to this
I can’t pull specifically bases loaded, 2 out, but just for bases loaded…
Team OPS+ (compared to all MLB teams)
2008: 80
2007: 92
2006: 74
2005: 147
2004: 136
2005 bases loaded slash stats: .352/.379/.547… wow.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
I was eating tacos, but...
I might could Pitch/FX it and see. I lost like three hours last night playing with Andrew Miller’s start vs. relief appearances.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
or Rich and Tommy could just say that he has
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
speaking of which
Pitch locations for Miller’s start, by pitch type
linking because it’s large and gets muddled when I resize it.
Anyway, I love that the algorithm called so many types of pitches. Not because Miller actually threw them (the cutter is almost certainly his slider) but because it makes the graphing much more colorful.
legend for the legend: FF = four-seamer, FT = two-seamer, CH = change, CU = curve, FC = cutter, SL = slider
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
Pitch FX says...
there was really only one called strike that was significantly up out of the zone. If anything, the zone was wide and low.
The team designation is for pitches thrown, so it’s the Nats who got that high call. Just for reference, the way these umpire charts work is that since PitchFX includes a notation of every individual player’s strike zone, the height of the middle of the zone can be averaged/normalized out; the zone shown is then the average MLB umpire’s zone for that spot. That, and tons more awesome Pitch FX modes of analysis that go far beyond what I can do, can be found at Brooks Baseball.

Bonifac-hero?
Lines up for Boner Face to hit 3rd in the 9th. Conflicted over how I feel about that.

win or lose
at least we ruined their fireworks
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
nah, i don't like that.
i mean, it’s one thing to lose the game and then watch fireworks. But to not even get the fireworks makes me feel bad for the fans, especially any little kids who were excited to see them.
what about
a double set of fireworks next time? And all you’d have to do is pay more money and sit through another Nationals game…

9-1 start
53rd team to start 9-1 or 10-0. 34th post-1900.
Of the 33 prior, 17 made the playoffs.
Of the 17, 13 made the World Series.
Of the 13, 9 won it all.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
Just don't be Cleveland
Of the 33, 31 finished above .500. The two who wasted their starts?
1966 Cleveland Indians (81-81) [started 10-0]
2002 Cleveland Indians (74-88)
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
How many wins would you expect secure a playoff spot. 89?
If that’s the case, we need to go 80-72 through the final 152
Maybe a few more than that.
Last year, the NL had PHI with 92, CHI with 97, LA with 84, and the wildcard was MIL with 90. Mets had 89, didn’t get in.
In ’07, Philly got in with 89… Chicago with 85, and in the West, AZ had 90. Colorado and San Diego were tied for the wild-card with 89, and the Rockies of course won in the one-game playoff.
89 would’ve landed the wild-card by one game in ’06 (but not the division, which went to the Mets with 97), a tie with Houston for the WC in ’05 (one game behind the East winning Braves), and nothing in ’04. (ATL won the division with 96, and Houston edged out SF for the wild-card with 92.) In ’03, of course, the Marlins got the wild-card — 91 wins — and they would have got it with 89 as well.
I say we just go for 100+ wins, and let the other teams sort out margins.
Yeah.
I’m glad the kids who were still there got to see the fireworks. That was cool, I bet.
Dolphins. They think they're so cute. Oh, look at me, I'm a flippy little dolphin, let me flip for you.
