Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Braves (4/15)

Florida Marlins at Atlanta Braves, Apr 15, 2009 7:10 PM EDT

Next Game

The best record in baseball Marlins are in action again today against the Braves.

Andrew Miller will be making his first start of the season.  This should be interesting.

Derek Lowe and his sinker have been very sharp so far this season.

Ichthyomancy is good to go.

Best of Luck to You!

[Game note] Chipper is out of the lineup for today's game and possibly tomorrow's.

Well, for an inning in which Miller allowed a run...

…I’ve seen worse. Only one hit, and none of the guys who were out hit the ball that well. Still very worried about the guy being out there, but the Marlins’ hitters had a better first inning than the Braves’ did.

and speaking of things I missed...

I didn’t catch the Aflac answer last night, on the three active pitchers with 10+ years and no DL trips. I knew Lowe, but who are the other two?

Javier Vasquez and Livan Hernandez, oddly enough. I guessed Hernandez, but drew a blank on the other two.

makes sense

I should have thought about Livan, and considering the eight million times they talked about “Over the last nine seasons, Vazquez is Xth in Stat Y” I suppose I should have realized.

I'm following this on gameday

Is Miller actually pitching well?’
Not gonna lie, I’m a little stunned

by Fishfins on Apr 15, 2009 8:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You know, Miller’s not a great pitcher, but there were several starts last year where he was really effective. Five starts in which he allowed 1 or 0 earned runs, a 2.43 ERA in May… he’s shown enough flashes of ability. Not saying I trust him, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he put things together. To me, last year looks like he was awful the first few starts, settled down, and then gradually fell apart (due to developing tendinitis?)

by 3.3seconds on Apr 15, 2009 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know he was good in some starts

just way too inconsistent. He is young, but patience isn’t my strongest virtue

by Fishfins on Apr 15, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah — I guess they’re stuck with him, but I’d be a lot more supportive of him if they sent him down to the minors for a year or two and let him work things out.

Dan was pretty far into center…I would’ve thought Maybin would call him off and go for it, but what do I know?

Battle of the Bullpens

You would think advantage: Fish, but Penn and Meyer….oh boy….

by Fishfins on Apr 15, 2009 8:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That's the complicated thing...

…a lot of our inconsistent pitchers are young, and could theoretically BECOME consistent pitchers. Penn’s 24. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since he was 21. He wasn’t exactly impressive vs. the Mets, but that’s one game. I’ll give him a shot, to be honest. I’d rather see him out there than Renyel Pinto, who has had kind of a lot of shots…

Why are the times on the Marlins broadcast an hour early?

It keeps bothering me. Miami is in the Eastern time zone and they practice Daylight Savings Time, correct? Why does the graphic show tomorrow’s game at 11:30?

Gotta win this game.

4 runs off Lowe, late lead in a game where arguably our three most suspect pitchers go back-to-back-to-back….this one would be nice

CBS4 Lead in about last Super Saturday

Some controversy over the choice of Flo-Rida, DJ Laz, and Pit Bull…

Also, we’re on the top headlines on ESPN.com again!

by jrsyeagle on Apr 15, 2009 11:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

going with the flo

http://cbs4.com/entertainment/Marlins.Concert.Criticized.2.986124.html

seems like much ado about nothing. Berliner is a idiot who seems desperate for ratings. He’ll say anything it seems. Flo Rida is more about strippers and nightlife than guns and drugs. And pit bull… well I have no idea what he’s singing about.

It was a surprisingly clean show from what I could tell. I’ve certainly seen worse at public events.

by brickell on Apr 16, 2009 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought it was perfectly fine

And I was really impressed with it all. I had a friend get me on the field for the concert and I was surprised at how many adults had little kids dancing around with them so Berliner clearly wasn’t there. DJ Laz carried himself very well in that interview and definitely represented the Marlins and the performers well.

Whoever had the fish only score in the odd innings, amazing pick. Fish had 11 Ks. Jesus they need to chill on that. Uggla looks awesome with the shorter swing.

I was surprised I hit that too.
And agree with the K’s. I’d like to know how many 3-2 pitches we’ve stuck out on this year. But I don’t think I’d like the answer.

I'm doin the Fish again. (Yeah, yeah, yeah.)
