Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Mets at Marlins (4/11)
New York Mets at Miami Marlins, Apr 11, 2009 6:10 PM EDT
The undefeated and best record in baseball Marlins take on the Mets once again.
Today's game will be known by many names since it is where the Super Saturday concert takes precedence over the baseball game. (And most of them won't be flattering.) If you live in Florida and you want to follow the action live, you will be listening to the radio. 'Cause you won't see it on your television.
Nolasco will be making his second start of the season. In the first he didn't look bad he just didn't have his normal command. Ignore the ERA, it jumped up when the official scorer decided Bonifacio's play in the field was a hit instead of an error. Apparently Bonifacio takes the official scorer out to dinner more than Ricky does.
The Mets activated Livan for the start today. So this will be his first start of the season. Hernandez, historically, pitches very well in JRS and with his bionic arm he is hard to get out of the game if he is going well. He normally throws a fast ball, slider and change and none of them very hard.
Icthyomancy is ready and will be listening to DVH.
Best of Luck to You!

Marlins at -139 seems about right, though this could be a battle of Bullpens.
Are we a flyball heavy team this year?
Seems Livan stopped walking and K’ing guys 2 years ago.

Cantu?
And for the second consecutive game, I say the Marlins have three home runs.
60mph from Livan
I used to know the physical limit on how slow you could throw a ball and still make the strike zone, but that has been pushed out of my brain for whatever useless facts I’ve recently learned.

I like seeing a 7 pitch walk to Baker.
Hernandez doesn’t have the stuff to compensate for free baserunners.
MLB.com audio problems?
Anybody’s Florida audio go all haywire just now? Had to switch to the Mets audio.

or we don't...
come on Ricky, help yourself out
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
Only a double?
Come on Boni, you can do better than that.
I'm doin the Fish again. (Yeah, yeah, yeah.)
As I recall
yesterday, we answered in the bottom of every inning in which the Mets scored. Let’s keep that going all year kids.

dang indeed
whats up uncensored didnt realize you were a marlins fan too. weve got hope for all our teams it seems.
I am a Marlins fan who follows the rays as well.
Have a family connection with the Rays, but went to the first ever Marlins game and am a lifer.
Beltran
That has to be the third time he’s beat the back-half of a double play in the last two days

I think craig pegged Meyer for the job
One would hope Vanden Hurk if he were healthy.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
come to think of it
It would make sense for Miller to do any long work if he’s going to be the 5th starter.
(scared)

i had forgotten how junkball pitchers mesmerize our lineup.
and thank goodness ESPN GameCast now has horrible video ads every half-inning. I was worried that there might not be a way to make a crappy service worse, but ESPN never fails me.
We should be able to simulate Livan in BP
I can still throw 75ish, and it’s not hard to flip lollipop curveballs
Cody Ross: Met killer
I’d take another one of those three homer games against them.
I'm doin the Fish again. (Yeah, yeah, yeah.)
at this point
I’d take a one hit game from Cody.

Ross
I’m getting a little tired of seeing Ross bat
Carroll isn't doing much better.
I’d like to wait for Cody to get through this instead of ushering in the Gload Era in right.
Well, who do we have who’s better? Carroll is a great fielder who has a .400 career OPS… as far as hitting goes, he’s a pitcher. Strictly a defensive replacement. Gload’s OPS was .664 last year, and he’s older than that now. Amezaga (when he comes back) is borderline decent, but in a decent OPS/no power kind of way; we’ve already got Bonifacio and Maybin to do that. Helms — can Helms play the outfield? — is decent against lefties, but Ross has always been better against lefties anyway.
Basically, I don’t think we have any choice but to give Ross a long leash out there, because he’s been okay before, and nobody else has.
Damn
If he can give us 5 innings of 3 ball on a really poor performance in actuality, I’ll take it.
Really throwing poorly today.
Miller warming up
so make that “start scoring a lot of runs”

see, this is what extended spring training is for.
but hey, why not let the prized prospect work out his new footwork in the middle of big games?
Okay
Comeback time. This is a new team. These Marlins are not going to roll over and die.

Come on Wes
You’re a wily old vet, we need you to do something.

That buckle up silent treatment radio ad
Half the time it sounds like the guy from Eastbound & Down (slash Pineapple Express slash Hot Rod slash Foot-Fist Way) but I can’t imagine why he’d be doing a Florida PSA.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
it's an HBO comedy
they only have like 8 episodes a season
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
speaking of HBO
If anybody is staying in, there should be a good fight on HBO in a couple minutes. The current most-dodged man in boxing, Paul Williams, versus the former most-dodged man in boxing, Winky Wright.

By the way — I don’t know, but my MLB.TV subscription is working now. Granted, I’m only getting the NY broadcast, but still. (Maybe they released it after the 7:00 window closed?)
Tried mine earlier and they told me I was blacked out because I was in market...
which would be true if I moved about 1300 miles.
I wonder what the record for most multi-hit games to start a season is. Apparently, the all-time record for consecutive multi-hit games is 13, held by Rogers Hornsby…
Since 1954...
Barry Larkin with 8 in 1990.
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
and just for follow-up's sake
7: Hank Aaron (1959), Bob Allison (1960)
6: Al Kaline (1955), Bill Skowron (1956), Curt Flood (1962), Cesar Tovar (1971), Jose Offerman (1999), Alfonso Soriano (2003)

If it's any consolation
Andino is 0-1 with a K
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
While that would sadden me...
would it Penn a better pitcher?
And if so, I need to watch the Discovery Channel more often.
I'm going to stop picking "important" people as my Ichthy players
Last three picks: Hanley tonight, Hermida, Cody.
Maybe I should pick Santana tomorrow…
Marlins Stadium: When It's Raining, The Roof Will Happen!
Man, I like Gary and Keith in general...
…but they always make me feel bad about the Marlins’ chances.
Slowly climbing back
I wanna run around my apt screaming like a crazy man, let’s go Fish!
I'm doin the Fish again. (Yeah, yeah, yeah.)
love this thinking...
5-run lead? Get K-Rod
Tie game? No K-Rod
Although this week’s THT Batted Balls Report suggests this may not be a bad thing for us.
