Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

Game Today

I hate doing only the game thread during the week, but it can't be avoided.  The sad part is it could happen again sometime later in the week.  When I mentioned this could be strange week, that is part of what I meant.  The other aspect is the tech guys made adjustments, for the better, to the site in the wee hours of the morning and I need to figure out how to make their additions work.  But soon we will have pictures...Yaaay!  Anyway, back to the game.

The Marlins are playing a rare night in Jupiter, tonight's opponent is the Mets.

Anibal Sanchez is the Marlins starting pitcher.

John Maine is going for the Mets.

Game time is 7:05 p.m.

I'm out of time.

Have a Great Day!

Sheffield

Bring Sheffield back for number 500? only 400k and the Tigers pay the rest?…….

Maybe for a bench role.

There’s no room for him on the field, unless it’s as a back-up to Hermida in left. I guess he could be this year’s version of Luis Gonzalez. But does Sheff have any kind of reputation for selflessness and helping younger players? Because Gonzo also brought that to the team.

He’d be wise to stay in the AL and continue being a DH if someone will have him.

We are so screwed...Bonifacio wins starting job.

Juan C. Rodriquez at the Sentinel’s Marlins blog reports thusly:

The corner infield debate ended today when the Marlins optioned first baseman Gaby Sanchez to Triple-A New Orleans. Billed all offseason as Mike Jacobs’ replacement, Sanchez got off to a slow start this spring and when he did start building some momentum a knee injury sidelined him a couple of days.

Meanwhile, Emilio Bonifacio continued to improve at third and looked better at the plate. The Marlins appear poised to open the season with Bonifacio at third and Jorge Cantu at first. Bonifacio likely will hit leadoff as well, which is a lot to ask of a rookie playing a new position.

Sanchez’s spring struggles are highly disappointing. But the fact that they’ve opened the door for Bonifacio is maddening.

And yes, Bonifacio could hit .290 with 40 steals and I’ll still dislike him. It may take years for my irrational antipathy toward Bonifacio to fade. Mostly, it’s the loss of Olsen AND Willingham for this guy. It’s that he’s the front office’s poster boy for the new Speed ‘N’ Defense approach. It’s that he keeps getting compared to Luis Castillo when he can’t hold Castillo’s jock. It’s that he duplicates what we’ve already got with Amezaga, and prevents Andino from getting more playing time.

And if they’re going to bat him leadoff, what the heck are they going to do with Maybin? Hit him second and try to relive the Pierre-Castillo glory years? Seventh to keep things going at the bottom of the lineup?

the leadoff thing

this is the only thing that scares me. i think maybin would be a terror at leadoff. i’ve said it before: he is the fastest thing i have ever seen on a diamond. i think bonifacio is mostly an experiment that will last a month. if he succeeds, awesome. if he fails, we have plenty of stuff to replace him with.

by GMFB on Mar 31, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

the problem with the experiment...

is that it’ll cost us wins in April, which we’ll need come September.

I don't know what to think

But it is Bonifacio, Maybin, Hanley tonight vs the mets…

Bonifacio just scored

by HadMatter on Mar 31, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

this is ridiculous

What about McPherson!?!? I can’t believe Maybin is going to be wasting away in the 7th spot. I give this whole charade a month before the Marlins realize Bonifacio and his .213 April average need more seasoning in AAA.

by farrish11 on Mar 31, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

er, I really don't think McPherson figures into their plans.

The fact that they’d start Bonifacio over him at third, his natural position, is surely a bad sign. And let’s face it, McPherson really hasn’t impressed much this spring. For a guy whose claim to fame is his 40 HRs last year, he’s only got 1 so far to go along with an underwhelming .239 average. He’s always been kind of an afterthought to the team (or perhaps a curiosity), and his only chance to stay on the field was having a big spring. He’s not even close.

If they keep McPherson, he might spell Bonifacio at third or Cantu at first, but they’ve already got Wes Helms to do that, and I’d much rather Helms get whatever semi-regular playing time is available.

40 home runs in Alberquerque don't mean diddly squat

Once again they should package up some of these guys and trade for some bullpen prospects.

I haven’t seen Bonafacio play yet, bu McPherson has been decidedly unimpressive to date. But he has some glitz value from the 42 home runs and Beinfast could probably get something for him.

to me Bonafacio

only cost us a guy with a bad back and a guy with no fast ball. We also got a couple of minor leaguers that might turn into something.

But Maybin should be lead off IMO.

I hope the guy really can field. Third base has been an embarrassment ever since Lowell left.

Gaby will get his chance and had a lot of bad luck this spring.

More news cribbed from the Sentinel...

Via Tom Jicha, the Marlins’ entire 2009 season will be on TV!

Between Sunshine and FSN, all games will be televised—no more freakin’ Rays games blacking us out. Yay!

by Fishcrazy on Mar 31, 2009 6:20 PM EDT reply actions

woohoo

We’re in the big leagues now. Honestly, I never understood how a Major League team could not be on tv.

by brickell on Mar 31, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope there are still 7 games not on TV

Check it out

it’s 12 minus 5 equals seven

http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/tv/2009/03/fox-sunshine-all-over-the-marlins.html

The home games are OK by me. If you really care, go to the stadium and buy a ticket.

The untelevised away games however drive me crazy. I even signed up once for MLB TV and paid $100, but the away and untelevised game was also blacked out on MLB TV. I demanded my money back because the only team I care about is the Marlins.

i had that problem

all you have to do is call the 1800 number, give them your ip address, and the fix it

by jrsyeagle on Mar 31, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

For the away games that aren't televised

I wish someone (technically adept) would hook up a big screen to a computer and we could all get together and watch it.

Forget Bonafacio, the bullpen is the problem

I’m getting these horrible flashbacks to 2004-2005 when we actually had pretty good teams but the middle relievers from hell

I think we can win with Bonafacio but not with this bullpen.

Had to see this coming

after bonifacio got announced at third. There was no room for him and he didn’t live up to expectations in camp.

Hopefully it means cantu, bonifacio, and sanchez are the corner spots for the next few years… and with any luck bonifacio and sanchez will swap places in the minors/pros quickly…

by jrsyeagle on Apr 1, 2009 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully Andino gets the chance in Baltimore that he never got here.

And I guess it’s another sign of the team’s confidence in Bonifacio.

I guess Gload will keep Gaby’s seat warm until he returns from the minors.

Andino

Yes I saw him make some acrobatic plays in the field and gets some good clutch hits. Wish him the best. I was hopping he would end up as a starter somewhere.

by jrhana on Apr 1, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

It sure isn’t very funny. Especially since marlins.com is reporting it too.
