Flotsam and Jetsam
I hadn't planned on doing this but I'm seriously running out time with a day game today. I guess everyone, not just the players, have to knock the rust off and get back into form.
Anyway, we have a Flotsam and Jetsam, so here it is:
WBC rosters set
Cool story about Scott Proctor
Danny and Bucky Dent's camp
BA's Top 100 prospects. And there are Marlins all over the list.
Something about Mike Rabelo.
Hanley Ramirez in the WBC
"So little to do but so much time. Scratch that, reverse it."
Name that movie.
And that is it for today's Flotsam and Jetsam.

And this just in from Counter-Earth...
“Marlins Willing to Pay Big for Uggla’s Power,” from an AP writer.
Naturally, I clicked on the link excitedly thinking that I’d somehow missed news of the team finally offering a multiyear, big-dollar contract for Uggla.
The article is referring to his arbitration win. Here’s a fun excerpt:
The Marlins’ annual paring of the payroll sent Josh Willingham, Mike Jacobs and Scott Olsen elsewhere this offseason. But Uggla’s back.
I’m not really that surprised, he said. "I actually had a really good feeling that I would be back. I don’t know why.
Maybe it’s because he knows the Marlins appreciate power from a middle infielder.
Yes, that’s what it must be. Thankfully the team didn’t trade the aforesaid Olsen for a replacement second baseman. Thankfully the team hasn’t made Speed ‘n’ Defense their new mantra. Thankfully Uggla isn’t universally acknowledged to be out the door before season’s end.
And how ‘bout that title? The Marlins “willing to pay big bucks” for Uggla, eh? Considering they went to arbitration with him in the first place to keep his salary lower? And how about that humiliating refusal to even consider a long-term contract—which led poor Dan to actually say he’d be happy with a “crappy offer” just to know the team wanted him.
Lord, what a stupid article.

It's the AP...
they write for the causal fan who know absolutely nothing about the Marlins.
But I thought the Bucky Dent thing was kinda interesting.

Yeah, but...
the writer is supposed to know more than that casual fan. I’m not expecting an AP writer to know as much as we die-hards, but for pete’s sake, how do you NOT know that Uggla’s days are numbered? Or if you do, how on earth do you write an article that paints such a sunny picture in contravention of the actual facts?
These are rhetorical questions, of course. No answers needed.

One Thing
Uggla is definitely out the door. Coghlan apparently is MLB ready. We almost have a logjam down in the minors with talent right now. Uggla will get some mighty fine prospects. The next couple years look amazing.

Yeah, but...
it’s kind of weird how backward our expectations are. Other teams trade their prospects because they have a productive veteran locked up ahead of them long-term. By contrast, our team is a conveyor belt; you’re here only until you’re too expensive. And I don’t mean CC Sabathia or A-Rod expensive; I mean expensive as in “more than a two-year contract.”
It gets kind of weird when instead of growing up rooting for certain players, fans start looking forward to how much we can get for dumping them. Or they’re indiffernt altogether. I guess that’s why our fan base isn’t exactly legion.
