President's Day Chum Bucket

I actually took a rare trip out of town over the weekend and had the best of times.  However, given that I was busy having a Most Excellent Time I didn't have a chance, or more accurately, the capabilities of accessing the internet.  (Which isn't always a bad thing.)  I thought about rehashing all of the articles posted over the weekend, then I came to my senses.

To get up to speed: go read Photi at Fish Chunks, he has them all.  As usual.

Hopefully you have a holiday today.  But for those of us who don't, Welcome to Monday!  Boooooo!

The weekends are so much better in comparison.

But whether you have a holiday or not, Have a Great Day!

So, uh...

…how does the county plan to pay for the stadium if costs overrun?

Excuse me, correction: how will the county pay for the stadium when costs overrun? There’s doubt as to whether the Hotel taxes can cover the estimated cost right now. What will the county do when construction goes over budget and the county is on the hook for more money?

Also, note: Marlins fan since 1993. Attended about 10-12 games last year.

I'm optimistic

I think the stadium will not cost as much as people think it will. This being a recession, everything is cheaper. Building materials, labor, land, etc. The only thing that is not cheaper is financing of course, but the parties can pretty much determine their own financing terms. Granted, there probably will be some overruns, but I think it will be much smaller than people anticipate.

overruns

If the Marlins are in charge that may be the case, but usually anything involving the county is millions and millions of dollars over budget. Given the Marlins lack of specifics, I will not be surprised to see this go over budget as well. The Marlins are supposed to fund that themselves, but what happens when they decide they can’t cover it? Of course the county will come to the rescue. It’s a wink and nod deal, same as the PAC. That’s one of the things that bothers me most about the deal.

In normal government contracts...

the Marlins will have to be bonded in case they can’t cover their obligations. The cost of overruns will never be incurred by the county.

again

They may be the case, it may even be in writing, but my confidence in either the Marlins, the County or even the bond markets is not that high. They’ll have no problem rewriting the whole thing 2 years from now to give them more money when they come crying for it.

what are we waiting for?

Go get Pudge! Remember last years catching injuries? Remember how a veteran catcher can give guidance to all the new pitcher/ catcher combos?
Remember who was our best catcher ever? 3 million is a steal! We’ver been looking for catching, HERE HE IS… He is a known name. A favorite. A ticket draw.
What are we waiting for… A new stadium?

agreed

when i saw Pudge considering the Marlins scroll on ESPN last night, i was thinking go get that guy fast. i mean, i think Baker played well last year, but maybe a year splitting some time with Pudge could be beneficial in the long run.

and we all remember what happened last time the Marlins picked this guy up on the eve of spiring training. the middle of the field is always an area of importance. we would have Pudge, Uggla, HanRam, Maybin (assuming he can pick up where he left off), and our promising rotation. i’d take that against the Phils and NY Chokers.

MJ said not to give the ball to Bill Cartwright late in games. do you blame him??

that assumes Pudge wants to play here.

He’d have to take a huge paycut and agree to platoon with a guy unknown to most baseball fans. It’s a double shot to the wallet and ego, and I don’t know if Pudge is the magnanimous, “I’m a veteran just happy to contribute to a contender” type, a la Luis Gonzalez.
