Marlins sign six minor league Free Agents
The Marlins signed six minor league free agents to see if their is a diamond in the ruff.
The team on Friday announced the signings of six six-year free agents -- right-hander Kasey Olenberger, outfielder Brandon Tripp, right-hander John Fulton, right-hander Jesse Foppert, utility player Vinny Rottino and infielder Hector Luna.
The six are Minor League free agents who will be invited to big league camp in February.
There is next to no cost to signing them, and the team's only obligation is to carry them through Spring Training. Most of the time it doesn't workout, but every now and then it does. We will see how they do in Jupiter.

I remember Foppert
A few years back, he had good potential. He could be a Dan Meyers situational relief guy.

The others
Luna has some pretty substantial major-league experience — 703 career at-bats, during which time he’s logged a .712 OPS. Which is pretty lousy for a first baseman, but He is primarily an infielder, but Luna has played every position at the major league level except pitcher and catcher. So if he’s versatile, he might be a decent utility guy — better than Wes Helms at least. (Note, though, that almost all of his at-bats were in 2004-07… last couple years, he’s been nowhere.)
Foppert was a fifth starter for the Giants in ’03, but has battled injuries ever since. He has, or at least had, the stuff to be good. But yeah, those injuries.
Rottino is basically a catcher who can also play corner infield/outfield positions. But he doesn’t hit at any of them. Very little MLB experience.
Olenberger’s a 31-year-old pitcher. Spent 2006-08 in the PCL, where he averaged over a hit per inning in all three seasons. He was actually already in the Marlins system — he spent ‘09 at Jacksonville, where he reinvented himself as a reliever to great success (1.10 ERA in 52 games). That’s AA, though.
Jon Fulton is another guy who was already in the Marlins system — a guy who washed out as a SS/3B at Jupiter a couple years back, then returned as a pitcher. He’s got control issues, but did strike a lot of guys out in limited innings at Jupiter last year. He’s 25, so he’d better get moving.
Tripp also spent ‘09 at Jupiter. He’s a 24-year-old corner OF who posted a .789 OPS last year while playing half the season at DH. Doesn’t look like much to me, but he’s already in the minors, I guess.
Bo Outlaw's name is Charles. Chucky Atkins' isn't.
