Around SBN: Fighters React to Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

What we should do during the offseason......

With all these teams moving big time players around, we need to move some guys around. Personally, I am glad that we gave Jeremy Hermida away. We gave him a lot of opportunities to prove himself, but it has not done anything about it. I believe in Brett Carol because he understands how to play the game. He is a tremendous fielder and he got some huge hits for us last year. All he needs to do is hit consistently and he will be a great all-around player. One move that I think is necessary is to get rid of Dan Uggla. He has a lot of power, but he does not hit the ball consistently. Not only that, he is a horrible fielder. With him gone, we can move Chris Coghlan to second and we can start Bonifacio at center and move Maybin to left. And maybe, just maybe, we can get a good deal for Dan Uggla that includes a good third-baseman so we can move Cantu back to first where he belongs.

You may think I am crazy, but I know what I am talking about.

Bonifacio in center? For that, we keep him at Second and leave Coghlan in left.

But I really hate the idea of starting Bonifacio (at any position). You talk about how Uggla can’t hit for average and is a horrible defender, but Bonifacio is just as bad. Atleast Uggla takes alot of walks and hits for power. 30 Homers and 90+

Atleast Uggla takes alot of walks and hits for power. 30+ Homers and 90+ RBI for a 2nd baseman is spectacular. I’d much rather keep Uggla than have Bonifacio starting.

In my opinion, if Uggla is traded (and we don’t recieve a starting caliber outfielder or second baseman in return) Logan Morrison will take his place in the line-up (Morrison to left field, Coghlan to second, Gaby Sanchez at 3rd). Bonifacio should be our utility player, taking the place of Alfredo Amezaga….

But if you think about it.....

But if you think about it, Bonifacio leads the entire league in infield base hits. He may not be a better hitter than Uggla, but he brings speed to the table, and thats how we won the ‘03 World Series with Pierre and Castillo. I’ll tell you what, you were right about leaving Bonifacio at second and putting Gaby Sanchez at third to put Jorge at first. But I have a feeling that Morrison is going to be exactly like Hermida, a player that shows potential but does not perform. This should be the lineup for next year:
C- John Baker
1B- Jorge Cantu
2B- Emilio Bonifacio
3B- Gaby Sanchez
SS- Hanley Ramirez
LF- Chris Coghlan
CF- Cameron Maybin
RF- Brett Carol
Utilities- Alfredo Amezega(who is amazing when not injured)
Cody Ross( who is going to be our Ross Gload type of guy for us ’cause he is clutch)

We won in '03 because Juan Pierre and Luis Castillo not only had speed, but they could flat out hit the ball and get on base at a high percentage. Bonifacio will never EVER be Luis Castillo or Juan Pierre. He's the infield version of Joey Gathright.

And I’m STUNNED that you want to take Cody Ross, only our best defensive outfielder and one of our best hitters, and sit him on the bench. Sorry but that’s just ridiculous. Brett Carroll hasn’t proven anything yet. Why would you wanna take out a proven right handed bat with pop out of the line-up for another right handed bat who hasn’t proven anything and doesn’t project to be anything more than a solid 4th outfielder? That makes no sense.

And what makes you think Logan Morrison will be a bust? Have you seen him play yourself?

by JP 23 on Dec 31, 2009 2:00 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I have actually seen him play, and he reminds me of Herminda. And Brett has proved to be our BEST defensive guy. Every game I went to, he made at least five big plays to help us win. Name another player that has robbed Brandon Phillips, Jose Reyes, and Willy Tavares in the same year. And one more thing, Bonifacio knows how to hit. He may not get close to Pierre, but he his damn close to be another Castillo for us

by MiamiSports on Dec 31, 2009 10:17 AM EST reply actions

If you really did see him play, than you'd know that Hermida and Morrison are uncomparable. Logan has tremendous plate discipline, Hermida will swing at anything.

Logan Morrison is closer to Nick Johnson than Jeremy Hermida (without the nagging injuries). He won’t just swing at a pitch in the dirt like Hermida STILL does. They are completey different. You’re arguement makes no sense.

As for Brett Carroll, yes, he’s a darn good defender. But Cody Ross is equally as good in the outfield. So again I ask, if the are both great defenders, why are you benching the one that has proven he can hit? It makes no sense. They are both right handed bats. They both are equally good outfielders. The biggest difference is there bats. And you wanna take the one guy out who can really hit the ball? Cody Ross is our 5th batter in the line-up, you know, the middle of the order? Brett Carroll would be hitting in the 8th spot. You wanna take one of our big boppers out of the line-up for a guy who’d hit in the back end of the line-up? That’s just an awful idea. If you trade Uggla, and take Cody Ross put of the line-up, there’s no power in your line-up other than Hanley and Cantu. Not very smart.

BC and Cody are not equal

Cody can be a great defender at times, but Brett is GOD TIER when it comes to his defense. If we actually gave him a starting job (which I think he deserves) he’d probably be the best defensive corner outfielder in the league.

I agree though taking Cody out of the starting lineup is ridiculous. I don’t see why they both can’t start. Maybin in CF Cody in LF and Carroll in RF. Probably would be the best outfield defense in the majors that’s not Seattle.

That's true, they would be a top 3 defensive outfield.

However, I’d still rather start Logan Morrison’s bat (and think Josh Willingham defensively) over Carroll’s glove. His bat is just not good enough to start. He’d make for an excellent 4th outfielder though. But he’s not a starting caliber player….

And again, you can't compare Bonifacio to Castillo. That's an insult.

Bonifacio strikes out alot. Castillo doesn’t. Castillo had great plate discipline. Bonifacio swings at anything (kinda like Jeremy Hermida). Castillo hit for a high average. Bonifacio hit .240 as a lead off hitter, that’s the worst batting average for a lead off hitter for the decade! Castillo was one of the best defensive 2nd baseman of the decade. Bonifacio will never win a gold glove in any decade. Castillo is an excellent bunter. Bonifacio can’t even do that right! The only thing comparable between the two is there speed. But even then, Castillo was a great base stealer. With all that speed, Bonifacio doesn’t know how to steal a base. For God’s sake he was thrown out at 2nd half the times he tried to steal. That’s terrible. And I can’t tell you how many times he was picked off at first. All that speed, and he doesn’t know how to use it. As I said before, he’s the infield version of Joey Gathright. And that’s all he’ll ever be. Period.

Boni's role, et. al

Boni proved last year that he’s got to learn greater discipline (at the plate, and on the bases), improve his fundamental skills, and earn his way back onto an MLB bench. All speed gets you is a bench spot as a pinch runner (and that’s if he can learn to run the bases). If Boni makes something of himself, he’d make for a good Luis Castillo comparison. As if stands now, he’s the Jose Offerman and Ted Wood of the Marlins.

The rotation looks great… except that everyone seems to be apalled at the idea of a 6-man rotaion. One man, therefore, needs to be penned or dealt. If if’s penning, then I’d say Sanchez (because of his injury past), and if it’s a deal, then I’d go with Nolasco (because he’d get better trade value, and bring in more pen help).

Uggs getting dealt could help the pen, too… Moving Coghlan to 2B should provide help to a miserable defensive infield, and releive a crowded outfield.

actually, sanchez to the bullpen isnt that bad of an idea

team already has like 6 or 7 SP candidates. let leo have the closer job & if sanchez works well in bullpen then he can take over for leo if/when leo starts to blow saves.

may help with durability for anibal, take some pressure off rest of bullpen & sanches can stay as the 7th/8th inning guy. which is where we really need our best reliever
