Weekend Chum Bucket
It's not that we need another Chum Bucket, but what the heck, it is a part of the FishStripes offseason experience.
In sports today: there is only one bowl game today -- the International Bowl. It is played in Toronto, hence the name international. And interestingly enough, it could be a very good game.
In NFL action the playoffs kickoff with two games on Saturday and two more on Sunday. The Dolphins play the early game on Sunday. The NBA is on the slate with the Heat at home to play New Jersey. There are a ton of college basketball games both men's women's and some of them feature many of the Florida institutes of higher learning. In the NHL the Panthers are in action today, but the match happens to be in Pittsburgh. And of course, there are many other teams taking the ice over the weekend. And also there is probably a whole lot of other stuff going on.
If none of those tickle your fancy, just talk about anything that comes to mind.
Have a Great Weekend!

Another blurb on the Red Sox-Hanley rumor
From Peter Gammons:
• Ten days after the GM meetings, Epstein called Marlins GM Larry Beinfest and asked him if he were interested in trading Hanley Ramirez for a package including Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz. “No,” replied Beinfest. End of discussion. “The entire conversation,” says one club official, “lasted all of 20 seconds, a week before Thanksgiving.”
Okay, I feel a lot better knowing the Marlins didn’t (a.) initiate the call, or (b.) seriously consider trading Hanley. But what was the point of some "source’ leaking a futile 20-second call? And why does this sound suspiciously less involved than the initial story?
Is a Marlins official playing damage control because they did consider trading Hanley? Or did a Red Sox source exaggerate the call originally to make his team look proactive or something?

“Or did a Red Sox source exaggerate the call originally to make his team look proactive or something?”
Much more likely in my opinion. Red Sox front office had to do something proactive to prove to their fans that they’re still trying after yankees sign sabathia, burnett, and teixiera.

You're probably right, but...
I don’t even see how that would help them. Sure, they look like they were trying to do something, but that “something” went absolutely nowhere, and makes the Sox look desperate after losing Teixeira. Making an unproductive cold call to another team about an untouchable player doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
I’m sure people love being “unnamed sources”; they get to act all secretive and “in-the-know,” so they’ll feed a useless morsel to a willing scribe.
