NL MVP

Well, since the season has now moved onto that time when you play the young guys and let anybody that is hurting just go home, how about posting your top 10 for NL MVP! Last year, many people thought Hanley should have won, while others disqualified him because he could not really play SS. This year he seems better out there, so he can legitimately be in the conversation. My list follows, go ahead and post yours.

Notes:

Too many Cubs with similar stats—D. Lee, Ramirez, Soto, DeRosa—so they all end up splitting the votes and no one finishes top 5, despite being the best team in the NL.
I didn’t quite know what to do with Manny; he’s clearly the most valuable player on a team that’s surged to first place, but would they vote for a guy who played his first NL game in August?

A couple three things:

I would have thought more fans would love to jot down their top 10. Also, I’m shocked that Fishcrazy did not put Hanley in either version of his top 10. Hanley is one of 3 players with 30 win shares this year in the NL.

It’s also funny how similar Pujols and Berkman are this year. Both first basemen with great stats who play for Central division teams who were in the hunt for awhile, but are not going to make it. Albert’s OPS is higher true, but Berkman has more total Runs + RBI and has been more clutch this year.

My revised top 10:
1. Berkman
2. Pujols
3. Beltran
4. Hanley R.
5. Wright
6. Utley
7. Lincecum
8. Aramis R.
9. Holliday
10. Manny (he is like one of those pitchers you get at the trade deadline, then he goes 12-1, sure not as many wins as a full season player, but a hell of a lot less losses too.)

I've internalized the lack of media attention we get.

I figured the writers would get all caught up in rewarding the top players from playoff teams—hence, the sudden push for Ryan Howard, who is a purely one-dimensional player.

Anyhow, I’m still waiting till the season ends before making my final picks.. An amazing last couple of games that pushes one team into the playoffs could well be enough to snag the award. (Which is why I’m warming up again to Braun.)

I know I only did 9. I was leaning towards Pujols. Then I saw Wright’s stats and changed my vote. Then I saw Delgado’s stats and recognized how much more important his increase in productivity meant for that team. Howard strikes out too much. He’s a liabilty. Pujols makes me wet. To me, it’s between the top three. I think Delgado and Wright will take votes away from each other. I really believe Manny should get a lot of credit. I live with a Dodgers fan and I have seen exactly what Manny has done for that team (made them a contender). Delgado and Wright good. But Delgado has had bigger hits.

Been reading some good things about Lance’s chances (ha!), so he’s in.
Still no clue what voters will do with Manny. On sheer “most valuable player”-ness, I’d put him third. No other single player so drastically changed his team, perhaps besides CC Sabathia, who we know won’t many MVP votes. But I still think most voters will disqualify Manny completely, or put him way down their list.
