Going for Olympic Gold

Matt Treanor has plan to equal what his better half may accomplish.

His wife is halfway around the world, preparing to defend her Olympic gold medal in beach volleyball. But Matt Treanor's main focus is on helping the Marlins get to the playoffs.

''Hopefully we break even,'' Treanor said. ``We win a World Series and she wins a gold medal. That would be a heck of a year, wouldn't it?''

Treanor, who started Thursday for the first time since July 7, said he speaks daily with Misty May-Treanor, who is in China preparing to defend her title with partner Kerri Walsh. The two are scheduled to play their first match Saturday, about the same time the Marlins play the Mets at Shea Stadium.

Note: FishStripes will cover Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh's pursuit for their second gold medal.  If the Godfather Part II taught me anything, it was you never take sides against the family.  And Misty is definitely part of the Marlins family.
