Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Rockies at Marlins (8/3)
Colorado Rockies at Florida Marlins, Aug 3, 2008 1:10 PM EDT
The Marlins are going for the series win today.
After the first inning in Olsen's last start, he looked pretty good. Unfortunately his teammates could only muster one run for the entire game and Scott took the lost. He normally does his best work at home and during the day.
Rusch is a soft-tossing lefty and all that implies. The Marlins have faced Rusch twice this season in relief and did pretty well against him. As long as we will leave the junk over the middle of the plate the Marlins should be fine. However, if he starts painting the black with the slow stuff....well, you know the drill. Rusch is mainly a fastball, curve, change pitcher.
Ichthyomancy is awake but yawning. Best of Luck to You!

now THAT would be a good AAB...
not only because of the accomplishment, but because we’d finally stop hearing about the streak!

oh, and congrats to Auh11...
nailing the “2 3Bs” pick yesterday was one of the most impressive AABs of the year!

Judge Cohen
If she is at the game today there is no way she would say that having a climate controlled park would not affect attendance.

ugh..full count, bases loaded, two outs in the 9th...
i can’t handle this.

....
fredi gonzalez lost this game
once again proving why he is unfit to handle this pitching staff
by FriedFish on Aug 3, 2008 4:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
you mean pinch-hitting for Olsen?
I don’t have a problem with that.
by Fishcrazy on Aug 3, 2008 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I saw nothing wrong
with what fredi did. The only thing I would have done differently was bring Gregg in in the top of the 9th, which is normally a pretty standard move… Definitely a painful loss though, but you kind of felt it looming all game…

I think the Olsen PH was fine
I had a problem with Nelson being stretched into the 9th. Should’ve switched to either Gregg, or since Fredi was apparently playing for extra innings, Lindstrom.

yes
Olsen is cruising sitting, i believe, at 90 pitches. the only hit he has given up is a groundball to the shortstop that was beat out by the fastest player on the field. he’s spotting his fastball and changeup while making every Rockie look foolish at the plate. you have a 2-0 lead. your team is a horrible at hitting with runners in scoring position.
not to mention – we begin the Philly series tomorrow, and follow up with the mets. REST THE BULLPEN!
instead of olsen finishing what he started Fredi pulls him, and in sequence, Waechter, Pinto, and Nelson give up a run in the 7, 8, and 9. As soon as he pulled olsen for Gonzos bat i told my father that we were gonna lose. i knew it. My buddy phil immediatly texted me “what the fuck is fredi doing?” so I know im not alone on this one. The least gonzo can do is go down swinging instead of looking at strike 3 with the bases loaded – olsen could have done that.
Just like in the Chicago series when he left Hendrikson out for the 7th inning with D. Lee, Aramis, and Edmonds due up – he doesnt know how to handle this staff. It’s a shame to be a Marlins fan sitting at home and watching this take place.
I dont have a problem with pinch hitting for a pitcher in a situation like that – only when he’s mowing down the lineup the whole afternoon and it is only the 6th inning. let the kid pitch. i wont be surprised if our ever outspoken scotty has something to say about the move in the comming days.

The Situation
The situation was bottom sixth, leading 2-0 with the bases loaded and a chance to send Gonzo to the plate with a platoon advantage against a middling reliever. If Gonzo produces, Florida’s lead advances to anywhere from 3-0 to 6-0 with Ramirez coming to the plate with a chance to extend the rally. How much this particular situation factored into Fredi’s decision-making process, of course, I do not know. But in fairness, it was a prime pinch-hitting situation.

i have to agree with you
I mean, 1 hit through 6 innings is phenomenal.
Plus, I would definitely trust olsen with the 2 run lead.
Not only that, but hes not a bad hitter either, I think he had a 3 game hitting streak coming in.I also had a problem with Rhodes pitching to just one batter. Why did he get pulled?
I know its easy to criticize the move now but I was still pretty upset when Olsen was pulled.

tough game
these are the types of losses that hurt a team a lot, but we are gonna have to start picking up the runners in scoring position or were not gonna make it into october.

For what it's worth...
Gonzo is hitting .179/.281/.286 this season as a pinch hitter.
Olsen is hitting .190/.227/.190.
Was it worth it, Fredi?

Your AAB most definitely did hit...
Sorry about the oversight.
The Marlins play on Tuesday, I think I will remember your pick is here, but if I don’t remind me.
