Renyel Pinto down -- Doug Waechter up

As Jrsyeagle said in the comments last night, the Marlins have placed Renyel Pinto on the 15-day DL and recalled Doug Waechter.

Pinto was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a left hamstring strain, yet he will begin pitching today for the Hammerheads.

The move appears to be a demotion combined with an injury. When asked how long the hamstring has been an issue, manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I don't know, I couldn't tell you the length of it. He can handle it (in the minors) a little better than in a major-league game."

Pinto has a 25.07 ERA in August (seven games). His ERA since the All-Star break is 10.95 compared to 2.96 the first half of the season.

Gonzalez said Pinto would pitch back-to-back days and he expects Pinto to return to the Marlins after his 15-day stint on the DL.

Funny, I don't expect him to return this season. And even if he did, exactly what role could he trusted in? It's not that I'm down on Pinto, I'm not. It is just that his arm is spent for the season. Renyel did some great work early on and he shows a lot of promise for the future, but there is no need to extend a tired arm and possibly risk an injury.

Taking his spot is Doug Waechter.

Right-hander Doug Waechter, who has not pitched since Aug.6 because of right shoulder inflammation, was activated from the disabled list.

Waechter likely will be middle-inning reliever.

If Waechter shoulder is ready to go, it will be good to have him back.
